Whats official, some early ones broke or they are dropping like flies ?

Ours is trucking on quite happily at four years old.

The Daily Mail link comments are hilarious "Small over stressed engine was never going to work", who says its over stressed, are they engine designers, one mentioned the last good Ford being the Cortina, fitted with boat anchor Pintos that ate the camshaft every other week.

It was some early ones with a wonky coolant hose, the rest seem to be doing ok ? dont think its any more over stressed than anythign lse, I have a BMW with a 3 litre turbo with 320 bhp, twice as many cylinders and three times the capacity but three times the power, is it over stressed, thats the trouble its a subjective impression rather than engineering knowledge and also depends a lot on how its driven as to how much stress its under, and what conditions.

Extra points for a near death experience sad face as it conked out on the motorway.

Is it only 1.0 ecoboost, or all ecoboost? My wife has a 1.6.

Over 660 registration plates published on FaceBook page (tip of the iceberg many say):

https://www.facebook.com/groups/FordEcoboostNightm...

The registration list on pinned post of the public group includes mainly Focus 1.0 litre cars and there are estimated 90k of them on UK roads.

I'm not saying the Daily Moan or The Sun are great papers with fanatstic journalism but this is a serious topic that car owners and potential EcoBoost ownerd need to know about.

Separately.... and specicially... the 1.6 EcoBoost had a safety recall published in Jan 2018 for risk of fire. This was subsequently botched in its implementation and many people are still waiting for the work to be done.

The fix for the 1.6 is what many say is needed for the 1.0... i.e. including a coolant level sensor to stop engine failures without warning.

I've had a look at that facebook page...

"Nope, loved my Zetec S, but was constantly worried about it going and facing a huge bill..."

"You can’t put aside from the issues!! The Ford Ecoboost engine has a design fault!! It doesn’t matter what you do, service it every month if you want. It will fail one day without warning...."

"Life threatening fault..."

I thought Ford had fixed the issue. Seems like people are making a mountain out of a mole hill..

over 1 million on the road I wonder what the % of failures is for cars driven and maintained per the manufacturer recomendations

The same kind of internet luncay that told us the mk3 mondeo tdci's were unreliable.........

Almost certainly a tiny percentage.

Where did you get that "1 million on road" from... no random unsupported 'facts' on this thread please. If you have a link that supports that statement please post it soon.

The number of 1.0 litre Focus turbos on the road now are approx 90k. see www.howmanyleft.co.uk

5 years and 96k miles later, our 1.0 Ecoboost Fiesta is soldiering on well.
I know plenty of people running these engines to high mileage with no issues.

One of the newspaper articles you quoted states there are over 1 million ecoboost engines on the road.....and your OP mentions 'any model can join in' so it seems aggregating the number of engines is fair.

I and all other affected people would genuinely be happy for any one with EcoBoosts that are going strong. Please be aware that if there is any temporary coolant malfunction for even a matter of minutes you are likely to suffer engine damage and a bill for £5000. The secondhand value of these cars will drop as this becomes wide knowledge. Ford have not been able to publish what they have done to fix this issue, if anything, because they haven't publicly admitted there is a design fault.

If this was such a tiny problem why do Ford in the first instance try to do nothing to help those affected... and then push familes to breaking point? For such a rich company they would easily be able to afford to look after that tiny percentage mentioned on this thread. Maybe saving money to cover the now group legal action?

To be fair, I see your point. The main issue is with 1.0 litre cars but there are others affected. The legal action is casting a wide net at this stage, but its has been based on the figures known for the 1.0 litre engine failures of which there are many. The Facebook group is mainly 1.0 litre cases see for yourself... the group has been running for 2 years now.

"Many" - do you have any numbers? What percentage of ecoboosts built have failed?

In 2 years, that facebook group has attracted less than 2000 members. If it was as major and widespread as you're suggesting, the group would be an order of magnitude bigger.

A freedom of information request addressed to VOSA last year: link

A tiny percentage of cars sold are suffering from these issues.

Where is the data to make a statement using the word 'likely'

How many recorded temporary coolant malfunctions have led to how many bills for £5000?

What is the percentage of these cars to those that haven't suffered?

Unless I’m missing something, isn’t it widely known that the fix is to replace a plastic, preformed radiator to expansion bottle hose with a rubber version that doesn’t split..??

That is the fix to one problem. The other problem is that the coolant reserve capacity is marginal, so a small loss of coolant can cause significant overheating quickly.

Several 'fixes' have ben suggested, from tough titty to a level sensor.

660 recorded failures, 90k cars registered.

Mean Dealer Repair frequency of 0.007333 if my maths are correct. Within Fords expected tolerance I’d imagine, they’d probably be happier if they hadn’t used most of it on one fault, but such is life.
