What did I see?

Walking home from work the other evening, a Rover Metro (not Rover 100 or MG Metro) passed me; was a bog standard scruffy white car, standard metric style alloys but with an unpainted o/s front wing which had the original style filler cap in it.
The engine was obviously behind the driver and sounded either a V6 or flat 4 (but not Impreza Turbo gruff or VW rattly)
Car later came towards me, obviously no sump on show at the front, bodywork very original with no extra vents or ducts. The interior looked normal apart from the entire rear, from behind the driver being boxed in with original fleck/felt type covering. As it passed, there didn't appear to be any silencers across the rear or even one or more big bore pipes on show.
So what was it (sorry no pictures)?
