M or T series in the 220GTi ~ about that time that the first T-series appeared. Both are good production engines provided reasonably well maintained with decent oil and filter changes.

Several T-Series ( all turbos ) in my family have 170, 140, 120 and 80,000 miles respectively.

My son's 170,000 mile 620ti ( uses for his work ) drives as well as my own well maintained example with half the mileage.

The T series is one of the most reliable ordinary production car engines and examples exceeding 300,000 are far from rare. It is a DOHC version of the SOHC O-Series ARGroup engine and again, high mileages with those ~ 800,000 in one extreme case!

Parts still easy and cheap to obtain ~ if the rest of the old car is sound and the price is reasonable, you really cannot go wrong ~ terms and conditions apply with any old car ... smile

thanks for that mg the car is in pretty good condition has slight bubble rust on the lip of the bonet and a tiny bit on the drivers back arch where it meets the sill every where else is solid whats the performance like on them ie what bhp are they plus what mods could i do to the engine to give it a bit more power its a moonstone colour also the engine is spotless the only thing i didnt like about the car was it was smoking on tickover the owner said it started doing it since he put some oil additive in the engine put apparently hes done an oil change and it doesnt smoke anymore i was thinking along the lines of valve stem seals

The NASP T16 Rover cars are quite nippy, even by modern standards. If the car has a NASP T16 Rover engine, rather than improve that ~ some folks upgrade by fitting a Turbo T16 as it's quite straightforward and 200ps out of the box. Donor Turbo T16 MoT failures/accident damaged with good engines and turbos can be picked up quite cheaply on ebay and elsewhere. The donor Turbo T16 car will have ( or should have if someone has not nicked it ) the TorSen Differential gearbox which greatly helps get that 200ps power down on the less than straight bits.... smile

Note the slope of the DOHC plastic covers towards the front of the car. The M Series cars ( which are in fact stronger Turbo engine forerunners of the T16 ) have alloy can covers which are level and do not slope. Very few M-Series Turbocharged Rovers were made...

This is what a T16 engine looks like.

Did it look like this then ? :~

This is a friends early 800 Tickford Rover Turbo. Only a few hundred of these were made although quite a few are still about ~ mostly in enthusiasts' hands. The bog standard engine is far stronger than the T16 which replaced the M16. They have been modified to produce silly outputs as have the t16s but, they require more money spent on them as their internals need upgrading as they are nowhere near as strong as the M16's.

Normally aspirated M16s were quite common about twenty years ago.

The engine above and the one here:

is an M16 - a twin cam development of the old O series. The one in this pic has a custom sump and is missing the belt covers.

Don't think I've ever seen an M16 with a turbo but there are a few around.

What a purposeful looking power unit!

The M16 Rover Engine in the picture I posted earlier is Turbocharged. IIRC, Rover made about 500 of these Rover 800 M16 "Tickford" Turbos. That engine shown earlier is the one in this white example.
