I would say as ideal a first car as any. If the one you have an eye on is a well cared for example then go for it. Cheap to Insure and once you've got a year or two claim free No claims bonus (NCB), move on to something better if you so chose and have more reasonable Insurance premiums too..
My son passed his test @ 17 and drove a Rover Metro 1.1C ( C = carb Basic car ) got a few years NCB then moved onto a Group 17 car ( Rover 620ti ) when he was 20 paying much less for Insurance than on the 1.1C...... Now 24, he still has the little Metro bought new in the family in 1993. However, it's his track plaything now having fitted a 1.8 VVC k-series engine to it...
