worrying smoke
Discussion
hi there amigos, Im asing on behalf of a good friend who has a rover 220t tomcat, whilst coming off a roundabout onto the dual carrageway he floored it in 2nd gear, the turbo wound up and the car accelerated, as the revs were climbing suddenly all power was lost and a nice big ploom of smoke exited the exhaust, The car then resumed it's course and all was well..... any ideas chaps ? any thoughts would be welcome
What colour and how much smoke was it? Blue/black/white?
If all returned to normal afterwards then maybe it's not something to worry about although I can see why it would be concerning. Does he have a non-standard exhaust on it? It sounds almost as if one of the exahust boxes has blown all its insides out. Sudden lack of power due to wadding and other bits coming afloat and blocking the system, pressure builds up and blows it out, along with a heap of crap (rusty bits, wadding, dust etc) - then no pressure = normal service resumed.
However I'd expect a BANG when this happend and afterwards a much noisier exhaust!!
If the exhaust is ok, then it must be another problem but I don't know what. Can't say I've ever heard of this before on one of these cars or that engine and I've got a fair bit of experience.
You might want to pop along to www.rovertech.net - lots of friendly and helpful people over there (including me :thumbup )
Cheers
