I have just had to retire my faithful old MGBGT (hence the 'handle') and have replaced it with a very nice 220 Targa Coupe that I picked up for very little money. The car seems pretty sound (almost no rust, but a couple of very small 'dings' that I can live with).
The first problem is the cat, which still works OK, but rattles at low revs, does anyone know where I can get a decat pipe from and how much are they?
The second query is about a 'piggy-back' rheostat that can be fitted to the car's ambient temperature sensors to trick the injection system into delivering more fuel and advancing the ignition to give the old girl a bit more kick. One of my son's mates has fitted one of these to his 1.6 Astra and claims that it makes a real difference to the car. As a bloke who is happy to strip and rebuild SU/Solex/Weber/DellOrto carbs and the odd KK-Jetronic injection system, this gizmo sounds a bit 'something for nothing' and I would like to invite your thoughts on it please.

Nice to see so many SD1's on here - they were far beyond their day and built by a British Motor Industry that had a pulse instead of a pacemaker...

Hi,

The cat thing is more than likley the top heat sheld which is lose just pull it off. Demond Tweeks will sell you a bypass pipe if you really want one but I've had one on both the Coupe and the GSI and can't really tell the diffence so now just run the cars with the cats in place. (think I've still got the turbo one somewhere)
The resister thing just makes the car think it needs to be on choke all the time. Try www.rovertech.net for some more info but the general feeling is they are a waste of time
