As there were no threads about this car when I searched, thought I'd redress the balance.

Went to the North West region meeting of the Rover P5 Club last night - Thatch & Thistle, A6 at Blackrod - and saw one superb example of a P5B. Real beauty, owned by the RO, Geoff. They have their own forum at the P5Club and anyone can join.

But maybe we can see who else is into these gorgeous cars and get some interest going on these boards.

Looks like Vera may have to surrender to the ravages of time and surrender her V8 heart to be used by another should it be required. Will know more tomorrow.

But I have fallen for the charms of the older woman.

Well I'm a fan...drove mine back from Oxford to sunny Worthing yesterday afternoon, nothing i like more than hooning past modern euroboxes in the outside lane in a 38 year old Rover

Hi Jim, i guess you met up with our Geoff Taylor. Nice guy.

Anyway, as you know I have a P5B as featured on the cover of Practical Classics in July 2005. A proud moment!

These cars are under rated and therefore you get a lot of car for the money.. You have to be careful when buying because in the true tradition of buying a classic, if you buy the wrong one it can cost mucho money to put right.

Most owners tend to buy them and keep them a long time and rarely sell them in their best condition.

As regards the forum, I used to post regularly on their old one but since the moderation was handed over to someone with no sense of humour or balance I, and many others, don't bother posting anymore. It would be great to have a P5 thread/sub forum on here that I'm sure would be well used.

Offer still stands, if you need any help or advice you know where to find me.

Oh, BTW, I've had "Benson" for 7 years and done in excess of 24K miles - now has 120+K on the clock and still mkakes me grin every time I go out.

I also have a Chimaera i bought earlier this year. People ask me which I prefer - Both! They're such different beasts.

Odd thing is that the P5 gets the most attention!

Alan, didnt mention you by name but told Geoff that this site should be used more by members. I will spread the word but as you know, not many members use the webwaves. Great turn out though and plenty of them are off to National gatherings this autumn. The National Rally is in Wigan next year at Haigh Hall next September. The All Rover Rally is on 8th October at Manchester Motor Museum, which is indoors. Griff got a free pass on basis of the V8 engine if he's still mine by then.

sounds like you were made welcome. Good!

There are a surprising number who used to post on a more light hearted forum (the old P5 Club one).

I knew about the National "darn sarf" and usually attend but took the decisoon not to this year due to the water leak/overheating problem and time constraints.

I didn't know about the All Rover Rally in october - might be an excuse to vist the "relly's" in Liverpool (whereabout are you by the way?) and maybe meet you up there. Any more "free passes"?

The last 3 years the missus and I have been up to the Scottish All Rover Rally in ..... Scotland which is held over the May Bank Holiday weekend - A good bunch up there and some cracking cars.

Al

There was a gentle welcome. After two visits I feel at home. Would be better were I be driven and be able to drink the gorgeous real ales on tap, rather than orange or tomato juice. But that's moderation for you

Dont know the number of the chap that sorted out the Vehicle Pass for 08/10/06 but Geoff will do. However, the number at top of the Entrants' letters is the Museum itself: 0161 205 2122. Guess you'd just ask for whoever was organising the 5th All Rover Rally. But the ROs will sort you out, Al. See you there!

Off to bed for early on the morrow, to Turweston we go!!! (See Calendar) If anyone is going, look out for the TVR on the P6 Rover stand and say Hello.

Well, I got to the bottom of the leak on Benson - when I say "I", that's not strictly true since I took it to a local garage to pressure test and gas test but before he started testing he put it on the ramps and found the rear heater pipes were leaking - I can't understand why I couldn't see any puddles.

Oh well, my pride's a bit dented and as I'm so busy at the moment I have agreed to let the garage do the work of replacing the pipes. As luck would have it thne mechanic used to own a P5B Coupe!

First time benson has been in a garage for any work in the 7 years I've owned him other than for bodywork. The really annoying bit is that the renewal of the heater pipes was on my to do list as soon as the garage is built middle of this year - typical!

Anyway Jim, if you're out there, take a look at the events listing on the P5 Club pages - look at the 22/4/07 - a little jaunt I'm arranging that may interest you. Meanwhile I am up in the 'pool next weekend for my best man's 50th and am staying a couple of nights so let me know if you're around. and if you ned any bits.

How's the work on yor new(ish) acquisition coming along?

The new pipes are on - not a bad job but needs tidying up.

The garage must have tried to lift the car on the old jacking points and it's split the front offside under the wheelarch. Grrr furious - can't prove it was them though and it is corroded & must have been weak for it to split.

Ho hum!

I've been having a little trouble with the old boy recently (the car that is) - check out this thread for the diagnosis of a head gasket gone and the search for a replacement engine!

Al, hope the repairs are coming alontg nicely.

My Coupe has nearly had windscreen seals and and little welding jobs done as it has been laying in the garage for 10 weeks while he fits the work in whenever he can.... have asked him to drop the oil and change before he starts engine. I would like to remove sump and clean it - worth while? If so, is the sump gasket the same as a land/range rover V8, so I can go local? Cheers

The rechromed bumpers should also be done by next week. Then it is mot and full service. First week in May, the bus goes into R&S Coachbuilts for the full webasto conversion.

Re exhaust: Having parted with my faithful Bluey, I have just bought a(nother) dubious 400SE and the exhaust is blown at lowest point of the right hand manifold. Could get replacement from TVR for around £200 inc vat. But I'd like to replace the whole system with a bespoke one from a local firm. Could I use the old mnaifold for the Coupe?

Hi Jim, Benson returned to the road last week and had his first real run on Sunday when I put about 100 miles on and a further 50 or so today. It's nice to have the old boy back.

Sump gaskets are the same for all of the RV8's as the block is the same on them all.

Good luck with the MOT.

I doubt if the manifolds will fit as they are usually designed to fit into the limited space available. The only way you will know is to try them although I can't see what you would gain. From what I've learned recently there is little to be gained from changing the manifolds compared to other changes.

Are you still on for the Scottish All Rover Rally in late May?

Looks like I'll be spending some time in the 'pool during early May so maybe we can meet prior to the Sctland trip.

My garage build should start in about 3 weeks so I need to clear the shed of all my Rover parts so shout if you need anything.
