hmmm. incendiary 620ti alternator
Discussion
You might be able to get hold of a known working one from any T16 engine'd Rover. Does your car have air con? The alternators are slightly different between the air con and non air con cars y'see.
They are however the same between the turbo and NASP engines so you have quite a lot of cars to choose from.
For what it's worth, I was running a diesel Corsa earlier this year and it had a new alternator which cost me £160 (recon and exchange) so the price you've found sounds about right
350zwelgje - There is no 2 litre K series especially not in a 620Ti.

Thanks for the correction. Had the idea that the engine type/family must be wrong, but just pointing out a 2litre rover engine didn't seem good enough as a reply, and no 'data' available during the posting. Just trying to help. So here is the proof, turning 40 your brain does let go ;-), as I new all this stuff in the past.
Now waiting for the reply that an alternator is found.

I'm 24 and my brain let go already so don't worry about 40!
K series is in 1.1, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 4 cyl versions. V6 are 2.0 (used in Rover 45's) and 2.5.
All the older 2 litre 4 cyls are the T16 engine. (which came in NASP and turbo varients)
There was a 2 litre 4 cyl K series but it was only ever a race engine, I don't even know if it was ever used. IIRC it kicked out somewhere in the region of 200+bhp in NASP form. Think it was called the K2000.
And yes i'm a Rover nerd!
cheers shadowfax - well this definitely seems to be relevent.
the day before The Roasting i tried to start the rover after 3 or 4 days parked up and nothing. i thought this was strange as the car spends more than a week sitting on a regular basis with no problems whatsoever. definitely no lights left on or anything. so called the AA and the fella ends up doing a test thingie on the level of drain on the battery, and it is way over what it should be. im really no mechanically minded so i don't recall the figure. we had to idle the car for about ten min until the figure dropped below a certain level. the guy then told me to disconnect the batt when parked up until i can get it sorted, and that this approach shouldn't see any problems.
i had a strong feeling The Roasting and the above were related, this seems to confirm it. i hope fitting a new alternator will remove whatever is causing the excess drain on the battery. not too sure how flawed this logic is...
im still trawling around breakers/ebay trying to find a reasonable one to fit incidentally.
and i'd rather be having this problem with a griff than a rover 600 maybe the broken part that needs replacing is the rover fitted to the battery and i need to upgrade that, keep the battery and install a griff ...

Nice one This Griff has been temperamental all year whereas in 4K since bought last June till Christmas, it never gave me a drop of trouble. Cars, ey?
I have just removed my alt cos it's all a mystery to me. Noone told me to disconnect battery before touching the inner of the two nuts on the post..... Funny thing was, the sparks were bright and sent me like a right wuss into the garage wall in anticpation, but I never got a blast up the arm. Weird. Very grateful mind you.
All the best with the search.
Rectifier had gone. Been overhauled - new "stator plate" (?what's one of them?), bearings and rectifier, a nice black paint job, new shiny nuts & bolts and the thing's charging like never before. Super, all for £73, basically reconditioned. For first time ever I've had it, the volts stay near 13 even when lights and fans are on. Yippeee!
Hope you get yours soon Matt
