I'm going to look at a Rover 25 tonight as a donor car to a project I've got going on. The car itself is a Rover 25, although it's been heavily modified to look like the MG equivalent. I asked the owner what engine it had in it, and the owner said it has a 1.6 engine in it but it hasn't been declared on the log book. The fact it has a 1.6 engine is key to me even buying it, although I've no idea what the performance feels like when driving a Rover 25 in 1.4 or 1.6 guise. So I was wondering if there was any tell tale signs on the engine itself that would indicate it was a 1.6 or a 1.4? As I wouldn't be too happy buying it if it just had the 1.4 engine.

No, there aren’t any-the only way to tell is to look at the engine number and what it begins with.

18K4 is a 1.8, 16K4 is a 1.6 and so on.

The engine number is stamped near the flywheel end by the exhaust manifold from memory.
