Rover 25 starting issue

Hi my wife's rover 25 has failed to start. Unfortunately the mechanic I use is on holiday at the moment.
A couple of weeks ago it failed to start for her but when I looked at it the next day, I turned the key and nothing happened although the lights etc seemed fine. Then a minute later I tried it and it started OK has been OK for a couple of weeks.
Today it failed to start when I turned the key I could hear clicking around the dashboard area. The alarm has gone off a few times (sometimes the sound has been loud and at other times more muffled )and the remote fob seems to fail to unlock the car sometimes which I assume is an issue with the car rather than the fob as I have tried the spare fob with a new battery.
Would the starter motor cause these issues or could it also be a battery problem as the car is 13 years old now and I am convinced it has never been changed.

From your description, classic signs of poor battery performance. Clicking, alarm activated and occasional starts and non-starts are strong clues.
New battery should restore normal service. Best to check first. Before buying new battery, if you have access to a known good battery, fit that to the car and see what happens. I bet immediate start.
You may set the alarm off when changing the battery, So be ready with the remote fob. The alarm on my Rover 25 is very LOUD! Near deafening particularly when you have the bonnet up leaning over the engine to fit the battery ... The alarm system thinks car's being attacked......
All this is still fresh in my mind. I parked my 25 up unused for several weeks and the alarm power requirement gradually reduced the battery power. Then it would go off ... LOUDLY! Fitted strong battery and no more non-start click-click-click problems or false alarms. Little used family runabout so I try to use it once or twice each week now to keep battery charged up.
