Hello all,

Hoping someine can help... new tuscan 2000.

I have lowered the window to it's lowest setting and then a exited the car and locked the car with key fob. I thought (foolishly) the window would return to the top... it didn't!

Now the window will only rise up abou 40mm and will go no further, it seems to think that it is fully closed when it is not.

Is there a way to solve this? Any help appreciated.

It maybe the lock mechanism or the sender unit. Have a look at this thread.

Most likely it is the encoder unit thats placed in the door.
The encoder unit counts the pulses from the upward and downward movement of the window. It doensn´t have an endswitch for top or bottom position of the window.
So when you unlock your car, thats the moment when the encoder knows that the window is in top position. After that is a matter of counting pulses when the window moves. So by counting it knows the window position unless... it can´t count anymore.

The encoder is not protected very weel against damp or incoming rain between window and door.
So at first check the encoder connector (three pin). Most of the times one is badly corroded and causing the counting problem. The encoder is a smaal print mounted at half height at the door behind the door panel.

I could also be the encoder itself or the connector at the door pillar.

Hoping your able to find it.
Good Luck
Ronald.

What does the encoder unit look like? Is the idea to clean it up and put some contact spray on it?

Still not sure how to get it to the top if it's starting at the bottom?

Sorry

This may help:

Windows not closing properly/all way up

This can often be caused by a faulty or wet window Encoder PCB unit on the window motor.

Remove the door inner covering by undoing the 2-3 bolts in the door pocket. The Encoder is the small rectangular PCB with 3 wires coming from it screwed to the front of the window motor. Try any of the following:

Try putting the windows all the way down then setting the alarm to see if they go all the way back to the top. Sometimes this can simply reset the system and fix the problem.
Spray some contact spray (available from Halfords, etc) onto the PCB unit. Leave for about 5 minutes and see if it's fixed the problem.
Remove the PCB unit and try drying it with a hairdryer to remove any moisture.
Try simply removing the PCB and reattaching it in case of a loose connection.
Inspect the modules and the wiring loomb connectors associated with the modules. If corrosion is evident, clean the affected item/s and seal off with petroleum jelly or similar grease. It’s a good idea to smother the modules in non-corrosive silicone based sealant to keep the water out.

Hi guys,

I tool the door card off and basically I just had to help the window back up to half way. It was fine the rest of the way. It is trying at the lowest but seems to be stuck. Sprayed silcone on runners to try to help.

Anyone know what might be making it struggle at the bottom end?

sometimes the thread on the mechanism can get either damaged or gummed up, while you've got the door skin off, clean it up, check the thread condition and lubricate, it fixed mine when it wouldn't drop the last 5 mm

Do you have a garage? It may help if you can keep the car warm and dry for a few days. I've had a couple of brief episodes where the windows develop a mind of their own, usually during cold or wet weather when I've not used the car much. After a day or two of regular use (I can't get my car into my garage) it's fine.

I had this problem, the drivers window wouldn't fully close from outside the car..so when i got out the car and shut the door i had to go to the passenger side, get in and use the window knob to fully shut the drivers window and then use the fob when i exited the passenger side..it was a pain...so after taking the advice on this thread i took off the door card, removed the glass as it was in the way and then WD40'd all the connections and the encoder itself, i also siliconed the runners etc....now all good as gold. So cheers for the sound advice.
