Tuscan Buying Tips
Discussion
I am considering upgrading to a newer TVR. I currently run a 1992 S3c, which has been very reliable and great fun. I love the looks and performance of the Tuscan, but the scaremongers try putting me off. What are the key things to look out for. At what stage did the early problem prone cars become later more reliable ones? Having had the pleasure of driving a beatiful Tuscan S recently, I may stretch to an early S ( Y or 51 reg ). Any advice greatly appreciated.
Hi GJL
A small number of S6 engines were troublesome both in Tuscans and Cerberas. Unfortunately the scare mongerers you mention have blown the problem way out of proportion.
As far as I know S6 engines built from about Q3 2001 onwards have suffered no such problems (finger followers etc) and are ok reliability wise as long as they are looked after.
Early cars are probably all sorted now so should be a reasonably safe bet. Trouble is, mud sticks so selling on later might be a problem even though the cars are sound.
Depending on your budget and requirements, you might be best advised to look at models from late 2001 onwards. You mention the S and these are fantastic cars, but a RR or later 4 litre with the 380BHP motor will be virtually a match performance-wise and be cheaper to buy and insure, plus they don't have the kerb-unfriendly splitter to worry about and most have 18" spiders, AC, upgraded brakes and all the latest updates.
What ever you decide you are very unlikely to be disappointed.

Hello TSS
Would it be possible for me to get a copy of your list? I have just bought a 2001 Speed Six Tuscan and would be very interested in finding out what I should have looked out for!
Apart from it not wanting to select reverse without a fight, all seems well..............I hope that I am not speaking too soon!

Your're right, I usually go through 1st/3rd/5th before going into Reverse, but it still'crunches' when engaging which tends to turn a few heads..........
Maybe you need to adjust the clutch pedal position.
Is it hard to press down initially then suddenly goes right down?
If so it just needs a tweak to maximise the movement of the piston for the minimum pedal movement (but I don't recommend moving the pivot points as this makes the clutch unbelievably heavy and sharp-biting)

Pete, you need to email me through my profile so I get your email address as I can't attach the checklist via the PH mail system.

Would you like to buy my Tuscan? - I've decided to have a change - haven't decided what to get yet, (? new Tuscan S or a Sagaris)
Anyway, you can see the car at www.pbase.com/rjosborne/tvr
It's Nuvola Blue, Sept 2002 (52 plate) 4.0l engine, portland and blue leather, single CD player, 8000 miles, Full TVRSH, doesn't have air-con (too much weight!) Still smells new! The computer which records fastest speed ever achieved currently reads 152 mph, but if I had more nerve and more road, it had a lot more to offer (and thats in Dorset, where there are NO motorways!)
Featured as car of the month in the pictures section of Sprint in about Feb 2003.
If you want to look at it, I live in Dorset. E-mail me if you are interested. Price - £ 32,5000
