Hi,

I have the possibility of having my car blue printed, I kind of know what this involves but im a civil engineer not a mechanical one so my knowledge is limited! Has any one had their tusc done, and the pros/cons?

Cheers

Do you actually mean the car? Normally it is only the engine that can be blue printed.

Are you having issues with the engine? If it is all ok, I wouldn't bother with the expense!! Only if it needs rebuilding would I consider blue printing it.

Basically they take the time and effort to match up pistons and valves perfectly, so instead of them being +/- 5% or whatever, the pairs that move at the same time are as close to the same weight as possible

The idea is that this gives you a smoother engine and better performance - the increase is not huge, but may add an extra 5bhp - if TVR will do it for free then go for it, if not then it depends on the cost

A definition
Engine Blueprinting
A generic term used in the industry broadly meaning that every part of the engine is carefully cleaned, measured & “Hand Fettled” to ensure that every single part fits perfectly, all connecting rods are the same weight, all pistons are the same weight, crank bearing journals are polished & oilways clean & free flowing, compression ratios equal throughout all cylinders & many other detail items are checked & optimised to ensure a free-running, well balanced engine
In my opinion very time consuming therefore expensive but well worth the effort

Hope thie helps

cheers for that, just thought that if it is all balanced, carefully matched and fitted it may increase the reliability! am awaiting quotes at the moment so i gues it all comes down to how much it costs!!

just thought i would let you guys know that i was quoted for engine bule printing whilst being rebuilt would cost £500 and add up to 25 Bhp!! i was tempted but it would mean i would have to declare it on my insurance therefore increaseing it even more than the stack i alredy pay!

Why do you have to declare it? I know that mods need decalring, but surely blueprinting isn't really a modification - more just a form of quality assurance that the bits go together as well as is possible. If an assessor had to take the engine apart and inspect it as part of a claim - there would be nothing alluding to a modification would there? Of course....I could be completely wrong on this, but for £500 I would be tempted to go for it.

I am surprised that all Speed Six engines aren't 'blue printed' as a matter of course! Surely any high performance engine should be built to these exacting standards?

Get it done! It will make some difference but will give you piece of mind as to reliability and performance...

just got in from making the most of the blue skies and cotswold roads! i already have my car back now so cant get it done! the problem was that it would spec it up near a RR thus would have to be declared, i should have had it done but with having to pay for the rebuild (bloody warranty companies) i think i'll save the money for some ccc. im really happy with the car and its performance as its like nothing i have ever driven before, so maybe its something for the future but at the moment im a very happy tuscan owner.
