I need a quick bit of advice from the technical people here. Recently (two weeks ago) picked up the car from it's 6K mile service. Today checked the oil level (Molbil 1) when the engine was hot (over 60C) and it's approx. two inches above the max! Not sure if this is too much over or will cause any damage? Need to do quite a few miles tomorrow and obviously can not contact the delaer until Monday. I'm not very technical!!

Cheers,

Del

should not be a prob.

I was told it doesn't matter to much about overfilling as the engines do not have a sump as such.
When i had my rebuild they filled it about 2 inches more than the max mark and that was how it stayed untill the thousand mile service.
Just out of interest was you told to check the oil with the temperature at 60.I always thought it was at 80.

Not sure about that? It`s "dry sumped" and IIRC it would have been topped up to the max at running temp with engine OFF? With out being alarmist there has been case`s of "fuel bore wash" which means the fuel ends up being mixed up in with the oil hence the level being 2" higher, i read this either on here or on ToG some one might be able to spread more light on this?
How is the car running in general? Does any one else remember that thread? Good luck Tony

Leigh,

My dealer instructions were to check the oil level within a minute of switching off the engine, when the engine was 'hot'. No temp mentioned. I will do this in future when the temp reads 80C plus now!

Not going to worry about the high reading then.

having something similar...oil level just after switching off seems pretty high (above max)...

FYI, at my 6K service dealer told me the car was relatively dry on oil, but I had been checking quite frequently and wasn't letting the level drop...

is the level always reliable?...is the best time to check just after switching off the engine?

Dennis,

I was told within a minute of switching off the engine. If anyone has any other tips here, I would also appreciate them. I'm due to drop the car back to Castles on 19 January, I will ask the question and post a reply.

If you use Castle it has been noted by a few people that use them they tend to put a bit more oil in than necessary at the service so I wouldn't worry. The level will drop as it uses oil.

As it says in the manual, you need to check the oil on the level, with the engine hot (fans coming on ideally) and within a minute of switching it off.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Andy.

With the engine turned OFF, oil will drain back immediately into the oil catch tank (oil pump has stopped pumping!), hence why the oil level appears higher than it really is. In theory, the oil level should be checked with the engine running to give a true level reading for a dry sump system as I understand this to be (dispite not quite being an owner yet - give a week or two though!).
