Speed 6 engine failures. Not what you think??
Discussion
Hi all.
As the owner of the engine bit only, not the pretty plastic bits, can people please enlighten me as to what the extent of the engine failures were on cars that failed.
I may be speaking out of turn here but it appears that a lot of these cars are purchased by non mechanically minded people that put the cars into the dealer when they go wrong. I will not have that luxury.
It would help me immensely if someone could advise as to the extent of the re-builds on the engines, IE is it confined to head, head and valves, guides, scored bores, liners and or re-bores etc etc.
I promise not to comment on reliability one way or t'other.
All I will say is that as a bit of a phsyco I am fitting one of these engines to my TR6.
as part of the installation I will be probably loosing the cats, junking the MBE engine management system, re-working top end lubrication and trying to ensure that whatever you tell me has failed in the past doesn't fail in my engine.
With 360hp in a TR6 I can probably even richen the mixture and reduce slightly the rev limit for reliability by using a mapped weber alpha engine management system.
Thanks
Neil.

So presumably if cam followers wear, we are not destroying the cylinder block assembly?
I am assuming that followers will damage a cam lobe!
or is the other end of the follower to blame in contact with the valve and piston crown?
Are the followers just soft and wearing the cam or breaking causing a valve to drop, or worse contact the piston?
This information would be very helpful. I could use the detail which will help me decide whether to strip the engine down and re-manufacture the items myself before they break and damage an otherwise reliable engine?

Hmmm! What a great idea!!!
As far as the engine technology is concerned, well I'm a numpty in this field, but a reliable source described it as taking a bank of six Suzuki single cylinder engines and strapping them together. In the long run there is no reason to fear the Speed 6. I'm still slumming it with an old V8 but wouldn't have any hesitation in taking the plunge with an S6. There are plenty of good news stories as well as the problems.

You are certainly mad mate !
Engine issues:
Cam wear.
Finger followers (original batches buckled or even snapped due to parts not being able to take the strain)
Stretched valves.
Head gasket leaks.
Bad head design resulting in low oil pressure to top end.
...and thats just on my car !
Good luck though.... Hope you have a good life insurance policy!

Neil!! Where did you pick up a SP6 engine and if you don't mind me asking: how much was it? I do have a tuscan but following recent threads on here, am putting aside some cash in the event of something going pop!! Some rebuilds have cost 4-6K, so would like something to compare it to.

Bryan Lister has a tuscan and lives fairly locally.
He's a good bloke, It may be worth you having a word with him.

No nicking parts off his car mind!
