One of my exhaust pipes belches smoke when the engine is first started. OK when warm. I also noticed that the pipe in question has a lot more "soot" around it, almost like half the engine is running on diesel!

Engine was rebuilt about 4000 miles ago.

Anyone had similar experiences?

Yeah, mine did exactly the same thing.

Just as long as the smoke clears up when warm, I wouldn't worry about it. (does worry you a little though, I know!)

I'd give your normal service guy a call, just to ask them what they think.

Mine did exactly that for the first time the other weekend when first starting from cold...did worry me a little (loads of white smoke) but has not done it again.

Grey. It smells like it's just chucking too much fuel into half of the engine on a cold start.

It's running fine so I'm loathe to get it fiddled with!

Could be that the throtles need balancing.
The engine works as two independant threes if you get my drift, and there are two throttle pots and they can go out of balance with each other, so you could be dead right that it's chucking more fuel at one half of the engine.

Unburnt fuel is not good for catalysts so probably worth talking to the dealer about.
