Problems with Early Style Wheels?
Discussion
quote:It's now beginning to look like this isn't an isolated incident - I've just heard of a Tuscan that's had the same problem and had the (pre-spider) wheels change FOC. I would suggest that anyone with these wheels would be wise to check them thoroughly ASAP. Mike (who used to have these wheels on his Tuscan) Edited by MikeE on Tuesday 9th January 16:58
My 9 month old 4.5 was in last week to fix some minor electrical problems. A cursory call to the dealer to check everything was ready revealed that the engineer had 'noticed' that both front alloys were sporting hairline fractures. Another call to the factory revealed that 'over the last few weeks' this problem has come to light. He said that they were going to be 'shortly' contacting owners (via dealers i assume). They are going to fit tuscan style wheels to affected cars. He did say that it was only to cars that have cracked wheels, but can not imagine that anyone would feel too secure piling into Stowe at 130+ and have the front left collapse / blow out. I'm sure Mr Schumacher would not recommend it either. If anyone else has any more (accurate) info feel free to shoot me down here. Not too sure what the tuscan wheel is going to look like on the Cerbie either... Edited by W45TED on Tuesday 9th January 00:01
As someone who has just gone through the process of replacing the wheels on my Griffith 500 with these Raceline RL-7 wheels this is all a bit worrying. The problem I can see is that mine were sourced from Raceline not TVR so it's nothing to do with the factory. I guess I'd better have a good look at them and lodge my concerns with Raceline (who are now owned by Speedline) confused? you will be!
Regards Rich...
My wheels have now been replaced, with 'Spider' style wheels in anthracite. They look OK.
The dealer showed me the cracks in the original wheels, they were about 2-3 cm long running from the rim to the centre (some visible only from the inside!, ie. whith the tyre off!). The tyres on the wheels that had cracks also showed signs of being run at low pressure. (I thought I had checked them regularly, and they never needed more that a PSI or 2 to top them up).
The tyres exhibited the most worrying wear marks. Side-to-Side loading had caused a gulley several mm deep, mid-sidewall ON THE INSIDE.
the tyre was 8 months old and had done 9000 miles! I thought that I had checked them fairly regularly - Be Warned.
