SP6 engine diagnostics

Has anyone looked into whats required to link a laptop to the engine diagnostics port. I write software 4 a living and am wondering if any clever software is required, or are we talking a simple terminal program ?

I might be wrong, but I'm fairly sure this just requires a terminal program - for diagnostic purposes the port will simply return a code - the problem you have is geting the codes out in the first place, then decoding what any of these codes actually mean!

You can almost certainly interface it to a serial port on a laptop.

if it helps I have a list of diagnostic codes from A to K (ones that appear on the dash display).

Dunno if the same ones appear in the ECU
