I've run up 18 and it just keeps getting sweeter!

whoops! I've said it now

there is a Tusk in Northern Ireland I believe that has done 42

If you look at the stats the percentage of popped engines is not actually that high, trouble is bad news travels fast. I had a guy at the weekend look round the car lovingly, but he said "Trouble with them is the reliability of TVR and this engine" It was the final words from his lips as I found another use for my badly fitting roof panel

If you look at the Porsche Boxster - the engine on those go pop from time to time as well. Nobody mentions that though do they

The SP6 is a bloody race engine, no wonder it decides to retire early occasionally - forget Captain Birdseye!

But then I can rattle on like this, I haven't had a death in the family so to speak

Is it though?? AFAIK its a road engine that was further developed for racing??

Also, its true, porkers do go bang occaisionally as do BMWs - shock horror - but they get fixed quickly and properly.

I have nothing to say about the speed six, but im sure the cars a bloody brilliant one if people keep them despite problems. Just look at how many happy owners there are who have suffered so much. I guess its the TVR effect

I too had an engine rebuild but that was well over 30,000 miles ago. It pulls better after a good few thousand miles. When new it felt little better than my previous Chimaera 5lt (well run in with 50k on the clock), now it leaves practically anything for dead including newer Tuscans. I am pretty careful with the revs when the engine is cold and I keep a close eye on topping the oil up regularly but otherwise the car and engine lead a busy life. I'd be happy to buy another car with this engine in fact if they ever get a 350 targa sorted I will. . . .

Not a lot of consolation ,but if you read this months "Octane" magazine there is an article about Derek Bell's experiences with a Ferrari 275GTB.He talks about it having to have numerous rebuilds due to the Valve gear not being strong enough for the engine! I know we are going back to the sixties and technology and materials have advanced since then, but bearing in mind TVR has only recently started building there own engines it would appear they are having the same problems that the mighty ferrari had !!!

Chris

I don't know how you can comment on this, as you can only have the MISFORTUNE of owning one, if you've owned one in the first place. Therefore, you cannot have the Misfortune because you've not had the fortune... Pretty bad use of an 'Idiom' I would say

Mr Freefall I don't get it - are you saying that you have the misfortune of owning one or that TVR critic has the fortune of not owning one? I would feel very fortunate to own one - am I wrong?

As posted on several 'lets slag of the S6' threads, I've now owned a V8 Cerb, a Tuscan and a Tuscan S. The only engine I had a problem with (that required a full rebuild) was the Cerb. Personally, and I am airing my opinion based on ownership of the above cars, the S6 is a smoother, and dare I say it, more responsive engine than the V8. My only initial concern in buying a Tuscan was the lack of V8 power, which proved to be unfounded. This was brought about by the slagging the S6 Cerb owners got for not having a proper engine on the Yahoo Cerb owners group. If TVR started to make V8 Tuscans I would now stay with the S6.

The other issue I was worried about was the lack of V8 rumble. Having fitted CCC cans to the S6 (which sounded good anyway) I don't think I've ever heard a car with such an amazing exhaust note.

Tony is right. Any issues with regard to problems should remain within the ToG.

Maybe the S6 critics should remember that a race car doesn't go through a season with out having its engine rebuilt several times. With a road car with the shattering performance of the Tuscan you have to expect a higher degree of maintenance than for your average car. If you buy a 355 you'll have to spend £2.5K every 2 years on a cambelt service. If you don't have the financial resources to buy a Tuscan (which is extremely cheap for the looks and performance), buy something else.

Had my SP6 engine (oh and the car with it ) for 3 months now, 18k service due in three weeks.
Not had an engine failure to date, but previous owner had necessary mods carried out due to misfire.

Goes great, and still scares the shite out of me.....which is good news
