I want to get a few bottles of Mobil semi-synthetic 15/40 oil, which is what my car is running on between it's 1000 and 6000 mile services.

The only problem is, I can't find any!

I popped into Halfords yesterday, and the only semi-synthetic 15/40 oil they had was their own brand of semi-synthetic, and Castrol GTX Magnatec.

Does anyone know where I could get some of the Mobil stuff, or would it be OK to use the Castrol equivalent instead?

Try Esso Petrol stations. They sell Mobil oil as Esso is part of ExxonMobil. I bought some Mobil 1 from one yesterday. I didn't notice if they had 15/40 but they did have quite a selection of different types.

I could only find it at my friendly local dealer. I had to take along a container as they only had it in their drums!

IIRC thats the motorport stuff. About the only reliable place I could get it from (used it in Griff then wnet to Millers) was Demon Tweeks.

There is a phone number on the mobil website that you can phone and they will tell you where your nearest supplier can be found for each of their products. May be worth a punt.

Is this the same as mineral oil? as my dealer told me to use this and not to mix with synthetic. I am just coming up to my 6000ml service but going on a long run 1st so wanted to be prepared in case I need any. Now a bit confused what to buy!!!

Ed,

Yep had the same problem, couldn't find it anywhere! So I went to Castle and they said a lot of customers had said the same....so I bought some off Castle! Bought enough to last me through to 6000 service.

Darren was very helpful, otherwise I don't know where I would have gone to get it!

See you in a couple of weeks I'll be arranging another monster convoy to Mid-Essex & then we have our own Tuscan convoy later in day...can't wait!

Alan.

Edited to say you need to take a container with you!

Well think Ed would agree with me that Castle are a trustworthy lot They buy it buy the 800gallon load...so enough to get you to 6000 miles! Anyway, whatever it is its the same stuff you have in your tank now so putting the same stuff in...seems logical

Alan.

It is also fully synthetic and not semi synthetic!

As has been said, best to buy it from your dealer, then you are absolutely sure that the oil is the same as they used at the service so no problems of "should I shouldn't I mix it"

I was told by my dealer only to use mineral 1540 until 6000 service as mineral oil allows engine to bed in - as semi or full synthetic oil doesn't. He said never mix them either. He gave me a bottle of mineral 1540 to keep in my boot under 'sale or return basis' as going on Tiv's and Pasties next w/end and having 6,000 service upon return. To cap it all - now got huge crack across pax side of windscreen and touch and go to get it done for next w/end. see other thread.

Halfords do stock it (Mobil 1 Motorsport 15/50). I bought some last week.
