as a tuscan owner i was a little surprised to see my first set of shocks start leaking at about 7k miles - dont know if i should be. is this normal? im tempted to replace the whole lot with an uprated suspension kit, since the difference in cost isnt really significant. are the factory fitted shock absorbers infamously poor??

YES they are awful. Nitrons are said to be great, but if the budget is limited (like ours) Avo's are a damn sight better than the standard jobbies - no complaints so far.

The short answer to that one is yes.Mine did not start leaking but they never felt right, now have the Nitrons which are very good.

So how much are a set of Nitrons?

And do you have to, or is it advisable to, change the springs as well?

I bought mine as complete units from Joolz about 990 GBP including VAT.

Mine only lasted 5000miles !! now have Leda double ajst all round and springs, mega quality.Will let you know what they are like on track.

thankyou very much gentlemen, after reading some of the replies, im goingfor a full set of nitron springs and shocks, and after being terrified of driving my machine like an old lady, i hope ill be able to make up for the hole in my pocket by terrorising some sports hatchbacks.

even more shocks -

i learned today that the hot/cold flap motor that is necessary for being able to control temperature inside th cabin is inclined to stop working after a couple of years on the tuscans - a part that is not only rare but requires hours worth of work, fiddling with non-standard thread nuts and carving through some fibre glass. nice job tvr. why do you never hear of faults like this in any other marque?

Superfly I know what you're saying - you have a case for being hacked off

However TVR are a small volume car manufacturer; they don't have the budget that the leading makers have for R&D and so a large number of construction issues will only be resolved in the market place

BMW or Mercedes spec a new model and then drive a large number of them for months, pull them apart, bash them into walls, squirt water at them, shout at them, pull faces and generally er test them before they go on sale - this obviously costs $$$$$$

Your Tuscan would be a tad more expensive if TVR did the same

Sorry to be an arse but thought i should put it in perspective really!

Not sure if this is quiet true, the heater control unit sits under dash on the passenger side & is quiet accessable, I re-fitted my cold air pipe back onto last year as the pod vents were not working.I would ask your dear to show you where this "embeded" item is.

Where do you get the Nitrons. I understand that adjustable shocks are not available from TVR, what would everyone recommend for a Tuscan S.

Is there a company in the South East that can sell and fit Nitron shocks?

I'm sure Joolz will do it mail order. You mail the car to him, he mails it back with the new dampers on, would that work? Maybe not. Failing that, I know Peninsula deal with Nitron, and I suspect most TVR specialists/dealers would supply and fit them if asked (for a suitable mark-up).

Joolz had mine sent over to Belgium & local TVR dealer in Ghent fitted them.

offord do it too.

point taken re tvr budgets.

with regards to the hot/cold flap, i had it described to me by a couple of engineers over the phone - from two different garages, and since its a warrantee item, i wouldnt have thought they were embellishing their stories - if i had the time id take your good advice and try to see for myself where it is.

just got it back - the nitron shocks are brilliant, and the car feels entirely different: finally i hope i can translate 4 litres of bhp to the roads. cant say i know whether its better or worse than having a realignment, but can say that if you are considering it, do it.

damper kits are now coming through in a few weks rather than the few months it was previously .. I've got 6 kits coming in the next few weeks ..

Hi all, I picked up my new car from Kerridges on Sat (GTS Pearl Blue 2002 model). I sooo enjoyed the long drive back to Holyhead and the ferry. However the ride from Dublin back up home north has me questioning the standard suspension setup on my Tuscan, or indeed I wondering if my cars shocks are shot - there doesn't seem to be any compliance there at all to speak of.

I found the car was not at all happy on any kind of bumpy surface. It tended to crash through road blemishes and surface imperfections and transmit this straight through into the cabin. This had me diving for the brakes whenever I spotted a bump and attempting to steer around it (our roads are like mine fields in this respect). To me the car does not feel sufficiently well damped and is feeling rather unhappy on anything other than the flat.

Now please don't call me soft, but the car does not feel like it's suspension setting is working well. The car I traded in (Escort Cossie) shrugged off such surface imperfections. My mother's Puma and girlfriend's Smart are fantasically well damed over such surfaces - granted neither are out-and-out sports cars, but the Tuscan's handling is being destroyed by this lack of compliance.

Can't imagine how a RR car feels like if it's even harder? There are 7k miles on the clock and it is running on 18" spiders (which I know doesn't help). I think there is room for improvement in the damper/spring setup, but ARE THEY ALL LIKE THIS?
