Hail good people of Pistondom.

Long story short...

My mechanic replaced the UJ nearest the steering rack and unfortunately when it got put back together the steering wheel was 180 degs out. Took the 6 screws out the front of the steering wheel and whipped the steering wheel around. Great! Not great! Alas now the indicators don't cancel soooooo I'm going to have a crack at it ( he will put right but I like having a play)

I have taken the horn button off and removed the steering column nut but she wont budge of the spline. I don't fancy attacking it with a bearing puller unless i really have to ( bent boss cage etc).

Anyone know if the UJ by your knees would come apart and the collapsible steering column would....collapse.. giving me room to move the UJ down of the end of the steering wheel Colum so I could spin the steering wheel 180 and reinsert into the UJ? I don't know if the collapsible part is something that mover freely or will only collapse under pressure.

Apparently the new UJ in the engine bay was a bugger to get to and work on so that is also lower down on my list.

Any advice or ideas welcome and many thanks in advance.

I'd just do it properly and move the UJ on the pinion back to where it should be. It's not that hard to get to.

Get your mechanic back and ask him to do the job properly.

If it's an early car with the Vectra column then the lower column is a sliding section which should move freely.

I think from memory though it will only mate to the upper column and bar through the bulkhead in one direction though, as the male ends of each are flattened ovals with clearance slots for the locking bolts on the UJs, so you wouldn't be able to spin just one part by 180 degrees.

Yes I have read that thread.

Mine is the same.

This was the idea. (The steering wheel is up above).




But your probably right Mr Brush. I will take a closer look at the UJ in the bay.


I was planning to have a rebuild on the engine this year as a precaution and my Mechanic and I though we would leave this error till then as it was the end of the good weather and I was putting the Tuscan to bed for the winter but after a conversation (which was quite surprising really) with Jason at Str8six I'm now on the fence about a rebuild at the mo. Soooo I'm just having a tinker.
