just driving along in the cold with the top off, well it was a nice sunny day.
but as i was going home i notice a high pitched ticking sound coming from the engine bay, it went worse as i went to a higher RPM.
eg; you know the wineing sound when you go the a higher RPM, just add a ticking noise to it and you will see what i mean.

Has any one had this?
if so what the hell is wrong.

Well, I know that noise well

First time I took it to the dealer who listened and said "they all do that, will sort out shims at next service". Broken finger followers 200 miles later - engine out and back to Blackpool.

Second time was 500 miles later. Lived with it till the 1k post rebuild service. When the top came off they found a valve turret had gone right through a shim. Like a polo mint it was - and stuck fast on the valve stem. Back to Blackpool again for a few weeks.

Third time it was sorted just by reshimming.

So, the noise is probably clearences. The cause is a lottery. Hope yours is simple and quick. Best advice? If it's running ok, keep thrashing it until or unless it gives up!!

mine has been chirping when cold lately. took it to the dealer and they said it was the aircon belt that had come loose. its been tighteneed up and seems to have done the job. if that might help you.

If its a pre 2001 could be bad news but if its a 2001 on car will prob be just the tappets ,so a quick re shim is all it should need. Saying that like 95% of dealers they probably did not get done at 1st service.
