Evening,

I travelled to Le Mans weekend just gone in a 2002 TVR Tuscan and on arrival, I parked up and my battery was flat. Luckily a friend had a charger with him, which I duels used. The battery is 4weeks old. I checked all the usuals - battery connection and 100/125 amp fuse. Both seem to be in good order.

Looks like I need to change the alternator and I would like to attempt this myself. Does anyone have any practical advice on 1) where to buy a new one/type 2) idiots guide to doing 3) what not to do and 4) possible any pictures or video clips that can be shared.

Any help would be really appreciated

Have you put a multi-meter on the existing alternator and checked the output voltage??

You should be looking at 13.5 to 14 volts.

Did/does the alternator make whining noises when rotating? (believe that's a sign of diode pack failure).

Might be worth doing these checks before buying a new unit.....Could be wiring?

Thanks Nick, I will check. How is best to check this? Ie, where do I place the connectors..

Can I start the car with the air filter off?

You can get a good idea what’s going on by looking at the dash. There’s a voltage reading in the LCD display.

With the ignition on and engine off a good battery will read over 12v.

With the engine running and the system charging the reading should be around 14.5v
