Woo scary - anyone else had this ?

On the way back from the last TOSH I could hear a bit of a faint knocking from the rear end. Checked the exhaust which was fine and put it down to the targa panel rattling in the boot. Then had a run down to Kent for a funeral and it got steadily worse. Dropped it off at Elmwood today suspecting a perished suspension bush. Just had a call off Toby to say one of the rear wheels was loose
Hadn't noticed any abnormal handling on the previous runs but did feel a bit twitchy this morning on the way down. Toby said it happened to him once in his Griff. Anyone else had this ? Glad I caught it before the comedy + big expense moment....

I had it on my first Mini in 1970. Rattling noise from the left rear, then car felt weird and made a strange noise going round a corner.
Stopped the car, pulled the big chrome hub cap off, three wheel nuts fell out onto the ground. The fourth was about two turns from coming off.
A bit less funny was driving my wife's 205 home from a full service at a main Peugeot dealer. No problem, 70 mph on the dual carriageway. Next morning parked it at Sainsburys, walked to the store, looked back to admire the car and thought the front wheel hub looked odd. Walked back and found one bolt missing, one very loose about to fall out, and the other two about half undone. Rang them and complained - full refund and an apology. Never went back there again.
These days I check my nuts regularly.

paint compresses, could be on the back of the wheel, or face of the hub or where the wheel nuts seat
Ok, now clear. Paint is original factory and wheels have been on and off dozens of times during its service history. Its done 500 miles since its 12k when they were last off. If they hadn't been tightened fully then I would have expected this to happen sooner but I can only surmise that the torque wasn't enough or threads have been over-oiled. Will keep an eye on it now of course.Gassing Station | Tuscan | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
