Erm, so what's this?

I popped the bonnet on the car earlier having not been under it for several months, certainly not since it was last serviced, and noticed this hanging there. Surely it should be plugged or screwed into something rather than just swinging lose? Any ideas or help appreciated

Might be completely wrong, but is it the air temp sensor which has fallen out the top of the air box?

thanks for the replies guys; the snowflake has been on the dashboard screen since ive had the car so i guess its never been connected in.
