I have a damn great crack across the front windscreen caused by a stone chip a few months back. My insurance company have passed on my requirements to their preferred glass fitter but after a week of waiting they are unable to find a new windscreen. Are these items as rare as hens teeth?

This is a very difficult process. I am going through the same at the minute and after speaking to those in the know, there is a lot of skill required to fit the Tuscan screen above that of many Autoglass technicians. I am in argument with insurance at the moment as I have spoke with str8six and they send their cars to the original factory fitters. I am arguing that due to the technical ability needed to get the screen right, I do not wish to use autoglass but the specialists from factory. My current screen was refitted by generic windscreen fitters and is being replaced due to major leaks and small crack. However insurance are standing strong despite autoglass technician saying it would be better with specialist.

My insurers, who are well known in the classic car sector, have referred the job to National Windscreens. I wonder if they have the experience to do the job. They will need the car at their local depot for fitting.

I am with Mannings and they were great when I had my screen replaced. Gave me the choice of using a personal fitter or their choice of National screens. I bought a screen from RG then payed a known skilled local guy to fit it and sent Mannings the two invoices which they reimbursed me for.

National have sourced the screen and will be picking it up in a few days as it is not local to them (or me). I guess it is from one of the known TVR parts outlets. bounce I will let you all know how it went at the fitting.spin

I had mine replaced under the insurance a couple of years ago and it took them 6 weeks to find one!

I had the same problem. Autoglass wanted to get the windscreen from one of their suppliers and refused to buy it from TVR Parts. So i complained to my insurance company and they put me accross to Nationwide and the local guy called me and i gave him the details of TVR Parts and he contacted them and ordered it from there. Once it arrived i left the car with them for the day and they did a great job. Worth letting them have the car at their garage though as it took them a while. Also i took the car to them a week before so they could see the other parts required to fit the new windscreen (i.e. top and bottom seals). Remember to show them how to take the roof off and how to open the bonnet as they will need roof off to change top seal and bonnet off means they can do a neater job round the scuttle.

Mannings or Classicline, pay the extra on excess to £90 for windscreen and you can choose who fixes it. When mine needed changing in my T350 it went to Bespoke Performance who organised it all smile Job done.

^^^^ That is definitely the way to go. Have the insurance on board and let them take the hassle. I never give it a thought, but learn by mistake, something I will look for in future when insuring, as the car is low it seems to have a tendency to collect chips.
