I recently noticed the outboard screws that hold the indicator units in were both missing (suspect they may have been like that from original build). When i took the LED's out to have a look, the gauge of the outer mould is too thin and the self tappers break through so now I just have open grooves. Any bright ideas for rebuilding some mass I can get a screw to grip into ? It is a 3-D curve so pretty difficult to bond in a block of some sort which was my first idea. I don't want anything coming through the outer Ambla so has to be a hidden internal solution.

I just sorted the same problem on my car. One screw on one of the rear pods was effectively going into thin air and the only thing holding the aluminum base in place was the friction between that screw and the inner surface of the pod moulding - plus of course the screw at the other side which was properly located into a lug on the pod moulding. I made up a small piece of shaped/wood, actually MDF, sculpted to the right profile and used expoxy glue to bond it to the pod moulding.(You need to rough up the surface of the moulding to ensure a good bond). Then I drilled a pilot hole through the aluminium base into the MDF to accept the screw without risking things splitting apart. Hope that helps.
