I did an oil service recently on a 2001/2 Tuscan which had just had the engine rebuilt.
After removing the drain plug from the engine, i found copious amounts of metal swarfe and some silicon sealant.
The drain plug did not appear to have been removed recently as it was covered in dirt build up.
On top of this there was a large chunk of the air filter gasket missing allowing grit and finer particles directly into the engine. One fastener on the airbox lid to engine was missing and i found the thread to be stripped. The seal afforded around the throttle bodies was marginal at this point.

It would appear that when you are getting your service carried out, ONLY the oil from the tank is drained. This fact has been clarified to me following an email from a dealer friend of mine who watched an oil change being carried out.
Sadly this is not the only area where corners are cut!

The Tuscan i did the oil service on had been to TVR Power for the rebuild and in my view should have been drained of all oil and stripped fully as mechanical failure does leave metal particles behind.
Not only this but silicon sealant has a tendency to block oil galleries therefore starving vital components of oil.
So i ponder this question. If the majority of rebuilt engines out there are affected in this way, how long will it take before the metal swarfe and silicon finds its way around the newly built engine?
Anybody had another rebuild?

Yes, loads of people have had more than one and this may go some way to explaining it?
