Just dropped the Tuscan off at the factory again
today for another rebuild due to excessive oil
consumption again. Car has only done 1800 miles
since I got it back in September.they have promised
to get it back to me before Christmas but did not
say which Christmas

Stink.

Did you have a full or just top end re-build last time?

Are they offering any compensation like a free service or something? Longer warranty?

Good luck, I hope you have it back for christmas.

Cheers

cue lots of people claiming the engines are fine now & don't have a fundamental design flaw, if you're lucky you may get blamed for mistreating it or over reving.

Hope it comes back in a reasonable time frame, it could be worse - could've happened at the beginning of summer...

Really sorry to hear it Col. There are too many stories of 2nd rebuilds needed within a couple of k miles of the first.

Is this kind of thing common with Tuscans? Or is it a TVR thing? Just that I'm thinking of defecting from a lotus to a Chim. Soz to hear about your troubles mate.

..it's a Speed Six thing. (generally) Chim as reliable as a Lotus.

jeez - what a bummer...just running ours in now after a 14 week rebuild at the factory...its not burning any oil than god.....doesnt bode well for the 'all probs fixed since 2003' etc train of thought though ;(

Not good, sounds like they didn't fix it right. Demand being placed at the front of the queue.

for that sort of issue i would ask for a complete new engine off the production line as it could be a inherent fault with the block itself

Mine had the same in mid 2002. The followers failed leading to rebuild no.1. About 2k miles later one of the cylinders gave up the ghost due to valve seat problems. A complete new cylinder head was fitted, along with the bottom end rebuild and the car has been ok for the 20k miles or so since.

mine seems to be using excessive oil as well its a 27k example having had a rebuild at 18k, if it points to a rebuild will tvr cover it under "good will" with the threat of solicitors and court action or if all else fails what can i expect to pay?

Mine cost me 4 grand in August this year and is
still under the 6 month warranty so should cost
me nothing. There is another thread running at the
moment where someone has been quoted 10 grand by
the factory.Unfortunately they have to take it out
and strip it down before you get a definate price
and it's a bit late by then.
Hope you get it sorted for a good price.

10 grand for a rebuild?? Jeez if that is how much they cost no wonder the warranty companies are always trying to wriggle out. I thought the cost was 4-6K depending if you had other things done such as RR??

Bad luck - are you saying you are experiencing heavy oil use as you were before the first rebuild? Has it just started using oil again or has it constantly since the rebuild.

I know I'm not armed with many of the facts, but do you think they might not have rebuilt it properly, or even done all the work they said they'd done?

It was mine that was 10 grand. It was a complete rebuild and the only part they re-used was the crankshaft. We were told though that it would be less if we were paying as they itemise EVERY single thing when it goes through the warranty. The warranty company questioned it and forked out 7 grand as they felt that there was a wear and tear issue on some of the replaced items

I did not notice much oil use until after
the 1000 mile service. It was most noticable
after a 200 mile motorway journey as the oil level
was on the max when I started out and then needed
3 ltrs to bring it back to the max after the journey.
The car was also cutting out under acceleration almost
getting me killed whilst overtaking. This according
to my dealer is due to a large inbalance in the throttle bodies causing some to stick making the
car judder badly. The throttle bodies where all rebuilt
at the factory at the same time as the engine.
Had not even started to give it any stick yet as this
was a second rebuild I have been very careful with the
revs and temps hoping for a long trouble free run.
Maybe next time?
