Does anybody who has had sat nav fitted know if they needed to have a speed pulse generator fitted or whether the fitters were able to make use of the cars speed sensor?

I use iPAQ system which is very good - it will only give speed from sats which I thought all systems did as this is the most accurate way of providing average speed etc.

I have sat-nav at as far as I am aware it uses the standard feed from the car without any extra kit.
