clutch fail - what choices do i have
Discussion
driving along today and noticed the occasional slight difficulty in engaging gear. blamed myself of course. anyway, within 10 miles, now in town + traffic, couldn't get any gears easily. stop at lights, start in gear etc, got home without too much fuss, but basically slave or fingers i would guess. will start investigations tomorrow. what choices do i have to replace unit, if need be. what have you used. what should i buy and where.any comments would be helpful. thank-you
....and, any ideas on cost?

Firstly, have you checked the master cylinder? I ask because mine failed in a similar manner - difficulty getting gears etc(55K miles 'ish) and my first thought was the clutch itself.
Believe you have 2 options now:
Firstly, replace original AP unit like for like. Think the kit is about £800.
Secondly, go for the Helix Autosport version offered by Racing Green. This is supposed to be cheaper and fully re-buildable....But it's only been on the market for a month or two, so not a known quantity.

nick, thanks.
master cylinder levels good - so i guess it's the clutch. my concern was ap fails
that you read on these forums, and how to go better. but after searching through my
history, probably complete since day 1, (i'm 3rd owner) it's not had any clutch work before - and
now on 43.4k, which is good enough for a clutch in my opinion. so i think i'm off to powers, replace the lot, and might get it back on road for weekend. (i don't fancy trialing the helix on behalf of rg. i use the car any day, any weather, so would rather know what's in there)

I'm having a Helix fitted at the moment to my 4.3 T350 so will report with initial findings shortly (along with gearbox rebuild and lightened flywheel). It's £750 inc VAT so a fair bit cheaper than the AP and providing it lives up to it's promise should be a decnet bit of kit, especially as it can be rebuilt rather than having to buy a whole new unit.
