Tuscan itch.....
Discussion
Long time admirer, need to scratch the itch.
I'm currently perusing various classifieds, a couple have caught my eye.
On the subject of engine rebuilds -one has a 'top end rebuild'. One has full rebuild....
If the top end has been done, why not a full rebuild? Is this something I should be wary of?
All advice much appreciated

TVRs Speed 6 engine had "top-end" issues, which was mainly the camshaft/fingers (followers as some people call them), which caused some major problems. These were addressed initially by TVR, usually under warranty, and whilst they were still in existence before some Russian bloke bought the company and cocked things up...
Other non-warranty work and since the demise of TVR, various reputable engine builders have carried out rebuilds, both "top-end" and "full".
Id say, the full builds are either down to mileage, and or people who felt that a full rebuild was what the wanted, and had the money to do so. There have been the odd "rod" thrown, but generally, Id say the bottom end is pretty good. Id also add, that of all the Speed 6 engines still being used daily, I'd wager that a larger majority will have had 'some' top end work done, (mine included), and that providing you follow the correct starting and warming up of these engines, a car with "work done" should pose no problems.

The only issue with the "top end" only rebuild will be down to the level of detail or time spent on the rebuild. The reason why the cams and followers get replaced is due to rapid wear. This wear results in metal in the oil system of course, which is bad news for moving parts.
During a full rebuild the bottom end will be stripped and cleaned removing rogue metal. The oil tank and lines should be flushed too. My car had the top end done only, I've just pulled it apart and there is scoring on a number of main bearings.
