How much oil is too much oil
Discussion
Folk seem to differ on opinions here..
so how much oil is your tuscan using ?
I've stuck about 2.5 litres in and done about 1300 miles.
Maybe about 0.5 litres is me overfilling it, so roughly a litre every 600 miles or so.
Some folk are telling me 'thats ok for a speed 6' others that I have some terminal nastyness about to kick me in the face..
interested to know what the variance is.
I've booked it into kerridges a week on friday to have to looked over just in case, but as always, peoples opinions on this forum are equally useful.

The rule of thumb is generally given as 1 litre per 1,000 miles. I guess that can vary depending on how those 1,000 miles were driven e.g. 4 lots of motorway crusing versus lots of start ups and then driving in slow heavy traffic. From my experience the above rule holds true for my car.
If it's "using" that much oil then, yes, it seems a lot. If it has a leak then that could explain it. Ours had a leak by the sensor and also the oil filter wasn't on tight. Oh, and it had a knacked O ring in the gasket. All in all it seemed to drink nearly as much as George Best on match day.
What grade do you use? I know the handbook says 0/40 but I've been reliably informed this is too thin for the engine and you should use higher.

It's 0/40 mobil 1 so it's like water.
I do small trips, and also rag it to the red light in most gears (once warm obviously)...i.e. I get about 100-140 miles to a tank max..
It doesn't sit for hours on motorways, it gets chucked round country roads up and down the box.
It gets a good seeing to, so I'd expect to be on the high end of oil usage.
Definately no leaks (or oil anywhere else.. like in water), so it's getting burned.
Maybe I have the 2 stroke version.
Engine sounds sweet enuf apart from that, so my slightly mechanical head says.. what's the problem... it uses a bit of oil. so what....

If it's worn valve guides (as mine was), then as it gets worse you'll find it starts chewing through sets of spark plugs as they get covered in the black stuff.

Fingers crossed you're just driving it the way God intended...
On Mobil 1 0W40 use to get about 600 miles/litre with the Castrol RS10W60 about 800 miles/litre. I use to think it was a bit high but it's been like this for three years & 15K miles (ie since 6K mile service) so I am not to bothered about it, and the engine is very smooth & mechanically quiet even when cold.
Most people who know the engines well say this is OK & the handbook figure of 1K miles per litre is a best using fully synthetic oil, although I do see on here that some people with more recent cars say there hardly use any oil or it maybe just the fact they are still using semi synthetic oil.

I'm with Powerlord on this one, mine gets through a few litres every 1k but it pulls like a train and the plugs are perfect after 5k miles. there are no leaks and no smoke even after standing for two weeks, don''t know where the oil is going but what the heck, if it goes bang then I'll just have to get it fixed.
still the best looking car in the world and about 10 rebuilds chaper than anything else with the same perfomance

ok. It's going into kerridges anyway. But looking at these comments and also going on previous cars I've had where you get folk saying 'yeh I drive hard too' etc only to find out they still get 100% more mpg than I get. I reckon it's probably ok. Just:
1) filling it with water..sorry 0/40
2) driving like a mentalist
I will have a chat with kerridges about filling it with castrol 15/60 or whatever. sounds like a good idea... even when I was lookiing into tuscans I thought it was pretty amazing that they were recommending 0/40 for some roughly knocked together lump of ali :-)
Sorry if point 2 rubs people up the wrong way, but 15 years of ragging the ar*e of cars has taught me that what most people think of as hard driving... isn't... chr%st I event managed to get 17mpg average out of my first car (XR3)...
I go to bed reasonably content that I am not heading towards a ravine filled with pushrods/valves/fishy fingers... and hopefully will not dream of them tonight again (you DO NOT want to have a dream about fishy fingers.. the subconcious mind wanders...).

Powerlord - come on, you've had enough information off this thread to realise you need the engine checked. If you are also following the other threads alarm bells should be ringing.
HOwever, glad to see you are getting it checked, I can't stress how important it is to get these things nipped in the bud.
Hope it is still running good
Dave
Easily beaten, ran the Griff down to 9 mpg on a very satisfying thrash

aye. it's getting checked.
But I don't think there is a problem though. What this thread (and others) have shown is that each engine is very different.
I'm gonna change to castrol 10/60 and that should sort it (after talking to kerridges obviously).
There also seems to be a tendancy for some to want to throw money at something which isn't the end of the world.. an engine using a bit of oil might just continue to use a bit of oil.. it need not get a lot worse.. hell my 300zx burned some oil in the turbos because of worn turbo oil seals.. I was told to get it sorted all the time and did a further 60K on it over 5 years.
It's not a sewing machine after all.

well. yeh. that's about the size of it isn't it. If it starts using more in 6 months than it does now.. houston we have a problem. If the same, we don't.
I don't know it's using _more_ oil than it ever has at the moment. i need to establish a refernce point (now) and work from that.
I drive reasonably aggressively and use the car 50% of the time most of which is not motorway driving and the car does not use up the oil and when I check every 2 weeks the oil is still clean and golden last time I topped up was in March. no leaks and no drips. could be I'm just lucky with my cars. Tell you what I much prefer my Tuscan to my E55AMG I have more problems with that than the Tuscan. a few other speed 6 drivers I know say the same we are not loosing oil
