SPEED 6 ENGINE MODS
Discussion
I know that TVR had a lot of probs with the speed 6 engine when it first came out. A lot if not all were recalled. But recently I've heard some horror stories of engines being returned up to three times, because TVR still havn't got it right. As a prospective Tuscan buyer, probably w or x reg. I would value anyones experiences. Cheers
I owned an early Tuscan (no 34) for a year, and in 7500 miles had no engine probs at all, although I had numerous other small problems that I won't bore you with!
Having spoken to may other owners and subscribed to the Tuscan group, for 2 years, my own conclusion is it seems to be the luck of the draw. These engines just seem to let go when they feel like it. lots of cars have had a rebuild by 6 or 7000 miles, there are plenty more that have done 15 or 20000 without problems. However I wouldn't genealise and say that it is the early cars with all the problems, lots of newer cars have also suffered from the same faults. TVR have put the early failures down to a batch of faulty 3rd party components, but cars are still going bang.
I made surethat every time my car was back at the dealer that they checked the valve clearences which was expensive but seemed to do the trick. Don't forget that the car comes with a 2 year factory warranty on the major components of the engine, a further years comprehensive factory warranty can be bought for approx £1000, I would say that in my opinion buying the warranty would be a good move.
Finally, although I had lots of probs with my car, I never regretted buying it, it was a fantastic car, and if you buy a good one you won't stop smiling.

that's pretty much my advice too.
:-(
shame cos the tamora has actually turned into a nice car (never liked the tuscan), but that engine .. keep hearing that they're finally sorted, but I'ev heard that every six months for the past 4 years. i'll believe it when I see a sp6 engine go for 50k miles without having to go back to blackpool, until then it's very much a flawed diamond .. has got great power but sounds limp and is too fragile by half. if it were a horse they'd shoot it.
great shame...

Mine's up to 16500 miles with no rebuilds. My advice: if you've got a good one hang on to it, and there are plenty of good ones. It's just dissapointing that there have been a fair selection of bad ones. It doesn't help that TVR keep shooting themselves in the foot by not fixing them reliably.
Folks,
I have to say I'm one of the happy [lucky?] ones.
14k miles, no engine probs. In for [late!] 12k
service tomorrow, having just returned from a 3.8k
mile trek to Lisbon and back.
The journey down, at the beginning of last month,
was 1540 miles in two days (with hindsight a stupid
idea). The car coped with it fine, and TBH, I was
ok too - no back problems, no real uncomfort. Can't
say I've ever driven 800 miles in a day before, but
I have done half and felt pretty ropey.
The journey back, done last week from Saturday to
Thursday, was 1500 miles through southern Spain
and the Pyrenees, getting a ferry from Bilbao on
Thursday.
Incredible adventure, not a thing went wrong, the
car performed amazingly. Few odd rattles from the
engine a couple of days ago, but I put that down
to crap petrol and extreme heat in the mountains.
Didn't see anything above 2nd gear for hours, so
understandable the car got a bit stroppy, really.
I know *a lot* of people have had trouble, but I'd
say a lot haven't - it's just that when everything
is fine, we don't say a thing.
After 18 months, I can honestly say the Tuscan is
a fabulous car. If your engine is a good 'un,
then you'll never wipe the smile off your face.

I can confirm the story about 4 rebuilds and then another engine failure resulting in a new engine, I know, I was that soldier!
I suffered from an oil pump failure (woodruff key), finger followers, finger followers again, valves sinking in to the head and then finally, a big cloud of white smoke as oil and water came together in a not very good way - now got a new engine, running that one in (carefully again) and will see how long that lasts
I met a couple at Le Mans who were told by their dealer that they have a 33% chace of getting a duff engine in their Tamora - frightening isnt it - and they seemed HAPPY with that!

I wonder who that can be?! If Mr. Continental is reading then whatever happened to that nice, reliable 4L Chimp then eh!
Ahh yes, 54,000 miles in 2.5 years and only a starter motor failure and dead coil - apart from tyres, fuel, bushes etc, and that was sprinted and track dayed as much as I could

They might have traded in a Triumph Stag.
That's not a very good set of odds to start from, especially given that the engine has been around a while now. There was a comment made on another post that TVR should concentrate on getting the existing stuff right before pushing new models out of the door, which would seem sensible.
