Prepared to get shot down in flames..!!!
Discussion
Now that all current models use the sp6 lump, couldnt we have a seperate forum to discuss the related probs or other issues that tend to arise time and time again. Not to hide it under the carpet, we all know the probs that have occured and the difficulties some have with resolving them. My point is that some of us adore the Tusc and personally had I found this site prior to ownership then I would have missed out on 2 fantastic years of ownership. Not just imho one of the most exciting cars available today, but also the dozens of friends spread near and far both on PH as well met in the flesh so to speak. The loads of fun events, and the endless supply of assistance when required. I am not knocking negative info, I would be well pi**ed off if I sufferd as some on here have, but its always the Tusc that bears the brunt. The major prob is with the early engine not the Tusc, and many potential owners will be put off from even a newer model, which again imo is not justified. As I say I am qite prepared for the abuse, but this is a discussion forum and we are all entitled to an opinion. By the way,.....I Love my Car.!!

I think your opinion applies to all models in the range. You know how it is, the first thing that non TVR owners talk about whenever the marque is mentioned....is unreliability irrespective of what type of the engine is driving the rear wheels.
It gets under my skin everytime that when TVR enters any discussion with someone who's never owned one the very first thing they say is, "Yes, but they're not very reliable..."
As for the Speed 6 - I was an early adopter of the Tuscan and there we're many more post and 'horror' stories about this engine so I enquired with the factory. To my suprise they confirmed many of the issues and explained them in non-technical terms. I owned my Tuscan for nearly 2 years with no major problems.
Without doubt this is the most pleasurable car I have ever owned, I was also one of these doubters after reading all the horror topics, however you soon establish most are Chinese whispers based on other unfortunate souls experiences.I get that buzz each and every time I use the car which is a minimum of 3-4 times weekly and at least twice a year to the UK where there will be anything from 1300-2000 miles each time,my next one is September for 10 days touring, with countless others to France in the year.

I also love the Tuscan as it it by far the
most enjoyable car I have ever driven, however
I think it is quite fair on a public forum to say
that engine can be unreliable.
This is born out out by the fact that mine took
seven weeks to rebuild as the factory already
had 16 rebuilds to do before it got to mine.
This is the car's second rebuild in it's 19,000
mile life and it didn't even make it back to me
this time before it broke again and is once more
back in Blackpool.
I still love the car and look forward to getting
back asap. Should story's like mine put potential
owner's off the Tuscan? I think it depends a lot on
individuals financial circumstances. Hefty bills may
not bother someone on 50k a year but to other's with
less to spend who have realised a dream by buying a
TVR for 20k( rather unkindly refered to on the forum as
wannabe's, though once you have a car surely your an actually
)
I include myself in the above catagory and after bills
of nearly 7k in 6 months I am very close to my limit
also.
Still as I said look forward to getting her back and hopefully getting some seriuos mileage under my belt.

Trust me, even on £50k-plus, when you're stuck with an unexpected bill for an engine in the same month as a service, 2 new tyres, RAC renewal, and insurance premiums, it really tests your mettle.
Having some greasy oik bank manager that's barely finished (failed) his GCSEs tell you that "it's your own fault for buying an unreliable car" doesn't help matters, either (he's gonna wish he hadn't said that...

Lady Topaz .. I'd steer clear of starting threads like this on PH .. as we all know there's a lot of Tuscan and SP6 - unfriendly people out there ..
have you joined the Tuscan Owners Yahoo Group? .. a forum for like-minded people to tell each other how lovely their cars are .. I think you'll find the reception you require there .
Now pray for a moderator to close this thread before it gets sabotaged ..

Di is a member of ToG, but maybe it`s a bit boring on there, you know, their aint any non Tuscan owners slagging off your car off

I'm ALSO a member of TOG's and whilst this is the the place to be to get the technical, informational and friendly help when required, you still need the open cafe's to have a discussion or opinion proffessed,
I'm going off to watch Top Gear so I'll have my Tuppenceworth another day.

The point I was trying to make is that it is good that
this is not just a my Tuscan is great kind of forum
in that it gives a good insight to potential problems.
It is entirely because of the views expressed on here
in the run up to my purchase of the Tuscan that I did
not blow my whole budget on the car but kept some cash
in reserve just in case I was one of the unlucky one's.
So I say thank you to the people who shared their experiences so I was able to buy with eyes open.

I would agree that a seperate forum on the Speed6 would be a good idea.
Firstly the Tuscan gets too much stick, which is more often than not aimed at the engine not the car.
Secondly, if people want to talk about the engine, then where better than a website such as this, in a forum set aside for just that, as opposed to hijacking unrelated threads and getting them closed, people binned, and tempers up.
It would also serve to focus and bring together the various opinions, experiences of those that have had the engine in one car or another and hopefully result in a more accurate history of the engine and provide people with a better idea of where the engine is now in terms of performance, reliability and the various incarnations it is now appearing in.
I love my car too, no problems to date.

It has always intruiged me that there seem to be far less SP6's are evil posts on the T350/Sagaris/Tamora forum and the Cerbera Forum . Now before I get corrected at I am well aware that the 350SaggyTam's are clear of the early FF problem and are a more recent build -but there are reports of owners hitting 12k services so you might expect some problems being raised by now.
I also know the Cerbie's are mostly V8's but they had some early SP6's as well and -I may be wrong- but there doesn't seem to be anything like the postings.
I think it would be interesting to do a poll of SP6 owners-just to see what sort of failure frequency we are looking at.
Be nice to have some facts.
Any chance Ted?

What’s the problem with just leaving things as they are, or are the SP6 owners now trying to be elitist. I read the comments posted from time to time and there are some good and helpful comments made for the owners. But it appears there is also an equal amount of just plain whining going on. Tuscans, with or without an SP6 under the hood, are a performance car and as such you expect to have problems from time to time, hopefully not expensive ones. Touch wood I'm fortunate my car performs well, uses no oil and has not broken down. I tend to drive the Tuscan (sp6) fairly hard and I am probably one of the faster road users. That said I would like to see more technical issues raised, for instance how many owners have actually had the bonnet off and worked on the engine, against how many drive it to the nearest garage and say can you fix it. I suppose it boils down to whether you’re a poser or a driver.

Good point!

Most Tuscans are still pretty new, and I don't think many cars that are under 3 years old and worth £25k+ are maintained by their owners, even if they do have access to the correct knowledge and parts.
I personally am more than happy to get stuck in with car mechanics (built 3 Westfields, and run one as a race car), but would still much prefer to let my dealer look after my Tuscan, especially as it's still under warranty, and if anything should happen to the engine, I wouldn't want TVR to refuse to pay out as I'd tried to save (quite!) a few quid by servicing it myself.
