What's the recommended coolant?

See. there's a thing called Democracy as well!
... not that this is one! Ted got rid of sigs 'cos he doesn't like them. His site, his decision. I didn't agree, I thought text sigs were harmless enough, but they went anyway - see here www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=5574&f=24&h=0&hw=sigs.

quote:If you've been a member of PistonHeads for 15 months like your profile says, then you should know by now that PistonHeads is a benign dictatorship. You only get freedom of speech up to a point, and that point is when Ted says "enough!". The general feeling amongst PistonHeaders is that signatures are a pain in the neck and Ted has chosen to endorse that view.
i'll post what i want to as there is this thing called freedom of speech
If you don't like it then you're more than welcome to instead frequent other newsgroups, mailing lists and web sites where signatures, pictorial signoffs and 10 lines of crap at the end of evey post are the norm. But please, don't inflict that on us here and then say "if you don't like it then tough", because I think you'll find that an awful lot of people will return the sentiment to you.
Cheers
Jon
So back to the thread - I just put any decent anti-freeze plus water into my header bottle in roughly 50/50 quantities i.e. one wek I put in water the next time I top up I try to remeber to use anti-freeze. It's Shell stuff at the moment, never really worried about it, perhaps I should?. Rich...
Sorry Rich!
Depends on where you leave the car, and the weather I guess. Personnally I don't use AntiFreeze at all, but I don't leave my car out in the cold either.
Any anti-corrosion properties would probably be effective down to much lower percentages than 50%, so guess-timating a 50/50 mix should be safe.
I think you have to be careful with an alloy engine about the type of antifreeze, but it should say on the bottle if its suitable for an alloy engine.
For info I use Water Wetter and water as coolant, and it's effectiveness is reduced by glycol based antifreeze, so I don't put any in.
