Heres how to fit an s splitter

So i got an s splitter and could not work out how on earth it went on the car. My brain told me the t bar had to go underneath the car but i just couldn't work it out.
On the thread i asked on speed 8 and basil brush mentioned how to do it. I just about got it by that stage but when i went and did it i fully got it.
So i thought i'd make a thread with some pics as i found when searching quite a few people asking with no real answer, or pics.
If i had pictures i could have done it straight away. It really is easy when you know how
So first things first take off the main bonnet.
Then take off the service bonnet (12mm iirc either side) be careful if your on your own, i could see one of those corners snapping if your not careful.
Now undo the 2 bolts which hold the peppercorn grill on.
Drop grill
now you can fit the t-bar across, you may need to pull up the little rad a bit just to give enough clearance to get the bar in, which itself sits on the two front studs which the main bonnet bolts down onto.


I had to take those studs out though as there was a small bolt which i suppose acts like a washer when you put the bonnet bolts down. Leaving as it was would have meant the bonnet would of sat too high and possibly rubbed against the service bonnet.
I simply got a little bit of stud the same size and screwd them in tight.
Now you mount the bar across, screw in the studding and then make a small cross on the inside of the peppercorn grill where the stud will go through.
Drill a 12mm or similar size hole where you marked the cross.
Screw stud in tight and poke through your new hole.
Now put back the grill and do the bolts back up.
Now you can get hold of the splitter. I marked exactly halway across the splitter then i got under the car and maked exactly half way between the two openings which i think allow access to the rad mounts.
The back of the splitter will sit along the back line of those opening iykwim.
I then measured how far it was to my piece of studding sticking out. It was 390mm in my case (should be the same for everyone.
I then marked 390mm in on the splitter and drilled another 12mm hole.
I then placed the splitter in position and while holding it steady i used a 15mm self tapping screw in each corner and screwed straight in. Speed eight made a proper mounting plate but im not good enough to do that. Its held in bloody tight and isnt going anywhere.
Put a washer on the end of stud, then 13mm nut and do up.
Yes bolts will be better instead of screws but getting to them won't be funny!
Service bonnet back on
main bonnet back on- the 13mm bolts will hold the t bar solid!

Then cut bit of protruding stud off. I havent done mine yet as i need to drive the car properly to make sure i havent got the angle wrong, tbh i dont think it can be that wrong as it just sort of mounts how it mounts iykwim.
Got to take it off though this week and spray it satin black to match my refurbed badges and soon to be wheels

You can always have a look at mine to compare the angle of the front splitter?
The two bolts either side of the centre stud are screwed into nuts that are glued into the body work when I guess the car was originally made. There is no way of accessing the nuts without removing the radiator as I found out.
I saw you on Saturday night about 9:30 and flashed you as you came out of G Ride.
When we returned from the local super market I did drive around the Rive to see if you returned. I thought you may have gone to TAG 11.

As has already been mentioned, you're going to need a whole load more screws securing that splitter.
Speaking as someone that has had one fold in half at triple figures, it's bloody scary!
I now have a 12 inch bar of aluminium which the threaded post goes through and I them screw either end in as well to give a good load spreader, I've also got another 10 or so screws around the edge.
This ones not going anywhere!

Thanks for this, will be fitting my splitter soon...
I had the rear spoiler fitted to mine as was fitted to the 'S', and was told that without fitting a splitter too, id not get the benefits of one without the other (something about too much down force with the spoiler and making the front end lighter without a splitter)...would this not be the same in principle to a spitter being fitted without a spoiler?

thinking of fitting one to a standard Mk1.
Assuming the car has been set up and the ride height sorted, should the splitter be flat to the ground as thinking it could work against you and create lift if the angle is the wrong way?
Too much the other way and surely the splitter creates drag?
