I've just had a rush of blood to the head and purchased a Tuscan Mk1. Had a couple of electrical problems when I picked it up such as a flat battery, door and boot not opening and heater a/c not working. The a/c worked initially but ceased when I switched on the fan and has not worked since.

It appears the battery was the original TVR one so not surpising it was well and truly knackered after 10 years. Changing that got the passenger door & boot working, initially but not fully - the window dropped, door opened but window did not close when the door was closed. It then stopped working altogether, as did the boot, and the window would not work at all, even via the window control knob. Thinking this is to do with the passenger door ECU being kicked into life by a power cycle, I disconnected the battery again, which brought the door and boot back to life, but still fails to raise the window when the door is shut. Is this a classic door ECU fault requiring a new unit?

Also heater & a/c is still not working - is there an ECU for that too?

welcome

The door controllers are in the rear of the car and you will see them when you remove the centre section that sits between the seats. Swap them round and see if the problem moves, if it does new controller time, I have a spare....

The heater controls have a tendency to burn out and then the fan stops working or control to the flaps is affected. this lives under the passenger side of the dash (needs confirming) and can be repaired for about £60

Hi and good choice!

As above one of the ecus controls the passenger door and boot, they can be changed around to check. Most likely lack of use or moisture.

The heater ECU has 2 problems, firstly the earth pin is undersized and tends to burn out. It lives under the passenger side of the dash, and there are a few posts on it. If you can't find it (the ecu or the posts) let me know and I'll point you in the right direction. The second fault is the output capacitor, and can need replacing. There is a guy doing them, again should be able to find on search or let me know and I'll dig out the details.

Could be some earth faults from lack of use, or ecu's. There are a few breakers around at the moment.

could check the fuses as well.

search for unofficial tvr blog - good reference material and you can download a manual if you haven't got one.

Or just use it for a while and I'll almost guarantee a few of the niggles will self rectify.

I second that!
I had my boot not working for 48 hours straight and then it started working again. smile

Your problem seem to be a little more dramatic though frown

Hi and Welcome!

Sounds like new owner niggles, but advice given so far is good. Only thing i would add is to change the 100A fuse by the alternator, cheap and easy but can also be the cause of a few electrical gremlins...

Thank you all for your advise - that's very helpful, especially the bit about running it and the niggles will go away. Great pictures nrick. Unfortunately, the passenger door, window and boot have inexplicably gone to sleep again so that points to a dodgey ECU - the fuses are all fine.

What is the procedure for removing the centre console to get at the ECUs?

there are two screws, one each side at the front of the console. remove these and then lift the unit up taking care of the connections, you will be able to get to the connections then, very easy.

On early cars there wasn't any screws on thevsides but there can be a screw under the rear vent. Mine doesn't have any frown. Each car is different.

Mine has two screws: one beneath the rear vent and one beneath the ashtray.

Just the one screw under the rear vent on my early Tuscan. Disconnected the ECU, then re-connected, and the window, door & boot work again - a bit easier than disconnecting the battery. Swapped over the ECUs and all hell broke loose so put them back as they were. At least I have a solution if it happens again and will replace the unit if it becomes a persistent problem.

Thanks for your help again.

Hi! I'm having problems getting under my centre console to get the the wiring for the cigar lighter. I've removed the two screws either side and can find any other screws? How do I remove the vent and the ashtray to see if there are any more screws hiding beneath them?

Many thanks

There should be one at the rear of the console, pull out the rear demister vent and there will be a screw under there.

There's a screw under the ash tray on mine, but it doesn't have the screws either side like most I've seen. Might be worth checking.

The ashtray just lifts out.
