Hi there,

I'm new to this forum so thanks in advance for any help/tips. I've just put down a deposit on a 2nd hand 996 C4S without the switchable sports exhaust. I'm keen for a similar sounding aftermarket option: any ideas?

I've had a good look on the internet and can't find anything that fits the bill... I'm not too bothered about it's effect on power and I certainly don't want to spend more than £500. Any past experiences would be much appreciated.

It really is the best sounding exhaust for the C4S, used ones on ebay £500.

You could have bought mine with the switchable zorst;)

Welcome. Your post is a bit confusing - you appear to like the sound of PSE (don't we all). There are plenty of PSE-equipped C4s around so wondering why you didn't go for one of those? There isn't really much price difference between PSE and non PSE cars, perhaps a grand?

In any case, you can have the "official" PSE (which was made by Eisenmann) retrofitted. I think it's non switchable. The other options include Tubi and Kreissieg, an example of the latter here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjLHBAUgcGg

There's a sports exhaust Wiki on here somewhere that should tell you all you need to know.

....or buy what you want and do what you want to it.

(by all means keep the original parts so you can return it to standard come resale time)

The reason for compromising on the exhaust is that I only wanted a C4S convertible in black or dark grey, with dark leather. Also, for some reason, almost every convertible seems to be tiptronic too and I was only wanting a manual transmission. Wanted to buy in time for the summer too!

Any advice on which of the 2 'unofficial' exhausts sound louder/better?

Quite right. It is very difficult to buy second hand with every piece of spec you want - usually have to compromise somewhere...

As I understand it the exhaust mods follow exactly the same design as the PSE, it just won't be switchable so is effectively "on" all the time.

Only 2? There are dozens available - see the exhaust wiki on here (somewhere). What to do regarding an exhaust depends on what you want to achieve. Several manufacturers do replacement silencers (e.g. Tubi, Cargraphic and Fabspeed) and all claim about 10BHP increases - unlike PSE, most of the aftermarket silencers are 'straight-through' designs that reduce back-pressure at the top of the rpm band. Cargraphic also offers 3 sound levels. If you just want to improve the sound of your car, any of these will do the job but they all sound very different.

If you want to add more performance, 200-cell catalysers and extractor manifolds are available from both Fabspeed and Cargraphic. A full system will give you about 15-18BHP on a 4S and make the PSE sound very, very lame tame into the bargain. The full systems also offer weight reductions right at the back of the car where it really counts.

Somebody also mentioned Kreissieg. Titanium, MASSIVELY expensive but sound the Mutts Nuts.

My personal recommendation would be to go for a full Cargraphic system. You'll get the weight reduction, more power (and Cargraphic tend not to exaggerate the power increases their systems offer) together with a choice of 3 sound levels to tailor everything to your own preferences.

Nope, but nor are Tubi, Kreissieg, retrofit PSE etc. etc. The only £500 option is the so-called Gundo hack that can be done at Hayward and Scott

I always understood the Hayward and Scott "hack" to be identical to the PSE but without a switch - be interested to hear if I got that wrong?
