996 turbo clutch fluid overfill
Discussion
hi all. sorry for a lack of posts lately. busy boy
.
my 911 turbo is gaining clutch fluid in its reservoir under the bonnet.
its not ott, just a gradual fill up. the level on the pump has gone down obviously, plus opc reported dampness around the master cylinder last service. shall i just renew the lot ? or am i doing something wrong ?
cheers fellas.

Just be cautious before you start spending loads of money on it. Mine did this last winter and cured itself when the weather got warmer. I can only assume condensation somehow gets in the system in colder weather?
All the more reason to get it checked. Condensation = water and water + brake fluid is a big no no, that is why it has to be changed every couple of years.I run a Ducati and they have been prone to cutch cylinder leaks/problems etc - mostly due to inadequate slave cylinder seals!
about £2 to fix.
The principal is the same I am sure - so check out the area's around both the slave and master cyclinders for leakes and GUNGEY deposits - this might give you a clue as to the cause of leaks etc.

The issue we've had at work when this happens, it has been the slave cylinder and sphere causing the issue. I think more so the slave. Its basically an internal fault where the high and low pressure sides can mix and fill the reservoir. It isn't brake fluid in this system, it's pentosin power steering fluid. I'd suggest getting it checked out.
Same symptoms that I have with my 993tt. It's the clutch slave failing. A common failure with 993 and 996 turbos. I was advised to move some of the fluid from the front to the back reservoirs to see how quickly the front is filling (that is how much fluid is bypassing the slave seals). Have to decided to bite the bullet and change my slave.

Recently the accumulator on my 03 Turbo failed. Clutch hard to depress with engine off. Then I noticed some fluid wetness around the cowl cover that covers the clutch fluid reservior.

Porsche tech told me this a sign the clutch slave cylinder was bad.
Had accumulator and clutch slave cylinder replaced (under warranty!) and all is well again.
I don't have the paperwork handy to confirm, but IIRC the proper replacement is the 997 slave cylinder. Check with your OPC.
Sincerely,
Rockster.

Does anyone know how big a job replacing the clutch slave cylinder in man hours?
I don't but this might be of some interest for part of the job:http://www.renntrack.com/forums/showthread.php?875...

Porsche 'book' time is 4.1 hours:Remove underbody covers
Remove cross-member
Remove starter
Disconnect drive shaft
Remove pressure reservoir
Remove slave cylinder
Replace all and bleed clutch
I always find the book times to be a bit optimistic - they are probably based on working on a new car.
