Hi guys, wondering if you could help.

Do any of you know what the rebuild cost would be on a 2006 997 3.8 engine?

The reason I ask is because I want to know what impact it would have on my finances if the worst happens.

Thanks

P.S Search functionality is not working so I cannot trawl through old threads to find the answer.

I can't answer the question as I haven't had one rebuilt. But in the first place, you'll need to work out what the likely failure scenarios are. A rod through the block is going to be different to a broken piston ring (as a trite example).

No way... A crank retails around £1500/2000 mark, a piston, whether OEM or Wosner will be around £500 mark each, a set of bare heads is around £4000 etc...

why dont you get a reputable warranty to either cover all your costs or a percentage of your costs?

Why not even close?

Last time I priced a 997S.1 engine, they were somewhere between £6k and £7k on an exchange basis from Porsche. My local independent reckoned on about £2k to remove the old engine/install the new one. On that basis the info is correct.

Edit: I should also add that a proper rebuild by a reputable engineering shop (Hartech for example) will cost less and incorporate improvements to known weak spots, like the IMS rear bearing, that Porsche will not include in their exchange engines.

I would still be amazed if it were that cheap (especially for a 3.8) - either way there is a big difference between an engine, and an exchange engine.

Thats the deal ring you OPC!.. The 3.8 motor is cheaper than the standard engine. As i recall its something like 6750.00 or 6950.00 but i maybe a few quid out either way. Dont forget these are mass produced engines, almost to the point that any serious failure is a replace engine rather than mess around stripping etc. I am sure if you bought all the bits as stand alone parts it would be three or four times that figure. They (the factory) are trying to make it appealing and cutting the middle man out by giving new engines on an exchange basis for fairly low money. Think about it!!whistle

Since crank shafts for the 3.6 - 3.8's are cheaper in the UK than Australia, is there any way that I can get one from the UK?

or alternatively anyone know where I can get a second hand core it's a 2005 Carrera S. It's really just the short block that I need. Top end is perfect, only crankshaft is broken and that near the pulley hasn't effected No 1... Can't work it out..

Holy thread resurrection Batman! I started this thread back when I had a different username!!!

Vas0809, I see you are in Australia so I guess you are looking for parts suppliers in the UK?

Here is a list of places that may help in your search for the parts you need...

Cheaper enough to cover the shipping, tax and duty cost that you will have to add to get it there?

My 2006 997 has just come back from OPC from an under-warantee rebuild including new crankcase and also a few other bits got done at the same time.. how much?

'about 13k sir' smile

From the sounds of it though, about half that at Hartech. OPC say new engine is about 16k. But they're the ones claiming on the wtee I guess!

Love the car but would not run it without warantee.

edit: see it's an old thread - think policies have changed a bit!
