Pleased to say the sale of my silver 964 and the subsequent purchase of an Iris blue 993, both transactions through PH has been totally painless. Picked up the 993 last night and had a cracking drive back from Kent (busily flexing it's muscles not allowing Domster to get too far off in the distance in his Lotus C).

Dead embarassing for the seller when we turned up and the battery was flat (he's now got a 996 and hasn't driven it for about a month) - Anyway, he gave me £75 for a new battery so fair enough.

Just need to pick up some 993 RS 18" cups, front and side spoilers, clear/red indicators and lower the thing then I'll be happy with the look but just enjoying driving it for now.

If anyone has any of the above bits I'd be seriously interested.

hey congrats! How does it compare to the 'old' car then?

Different. 964 was raw, screamed out to be thrashed, felt 'oldish' but with a newer Porsche edge and looked fantastic (better than the standard 993 in my opinion) and very aggressive. Power came in hard at 4,000rpm and then it pulled hard all the way to the red line.

993 feels much newer (similar difference from a 3.2 carrera to 964 and then the same jump again) and the suspension is nicer. Smooth on bumpy roads but stiff enough on corners (could still do with being harder but it's obviously built as a compromise for soft city boyz and enthusiast racers). Engine has noticably more torque low down but doesn't scream as much until you get to 4,500-5,000, then it takes off........ All the way to the rev limiter as Domster demonstrated so compitently on the Amersham by-pass last night.

I need to think carefully about the set-up I'm trying to achieve, want it lower and looking tougher but don't want to totally lose the 'nice' feel it has.

Scottster, well done mate. I was very impressed with the 993's that I drove. And IMO they have one of the best turn-ins of any car. I would think carefully before lowering/changing the handling, so many people seem to get this wrong. I know a number of people who have bought secondhand 911's that have had suspension mods, and then had them converted back to standard.

Did you get the vario cam(ram) version?

And you let Dom drive your car???????

Hmmm, it is a fantastic car - modern enough to compete with a new E46 BMW for refinement and ease of use, traditional enough to still feel like a true Porsche and a true driver's tool.

I love it, I must admit, and a T2 will have to impress a lot on a test drive to beat the overall competence of a 993 Carrera.

It is well ahead of a 964 C2, just feels much nicer and more rounded. Like a decent claret left to mature for a five years. Not especially slow either - picks up from 4700 and yes, I did get it bouncing off the rev limiter at around 7000!

If the Turbo 2 or 964RS feel as 'old' as the 964 C2, or don't have enough redeemable features (ie brute power!) to win me over, I may have to follow suit.

Now will someone please buy my Lotus Carlton ;-)

PS Scottster's car is non varioram, 272bhp, manual, 2wd coupe. 'Classic' spec.

UV, Alas it's only the standard 272hp model (1993/4) but by the time I've shoe-horned a 450hp Turbo 4S motor in there neither you or Domster will worry about which model it is.

I agree about the suspension and after reading your stuff about £2k Roock upgrades to sort previously f**ked attempts I'll look into it carefully. I'll chuck 18s on it to start (which should reduce the unsightly wheel arch gaps) and then see how it sits. The drive is actually fine, just cosmetic really. I like a hard drive now and again but if I'm being realistic don't hammer it often enough to justify something tougher.

If it's raining you could beat Dom with a push bike
