Please read on before flaming me wink

I'm thinking of replacing my current 997S which is my daily drive as it's mileage is getting rather high by now. There are two options on my mind, either a MkII 997S or a MkII 7GT3.

Ideally I'd want the GT3 as it's a much more direct driving experience and a true step up from my 997S. However, I use my current car also to visit clients and they are fine with it as it's just another 911. A GT3 with its big wing is a different story as it's a very obivious and flashy car.

Now my OPC would be willing to (inofficially) replace the original GT3 wing with a standard Carrera wing so it looks more toned down. I know that this unsettles dynamic balance, especially at higher speeds and costs some bhp due to the lack of ram air effect. Given that I would not track the car (I race instead) and mostly drive it on speed regulated roads, I assume it would not be a big issue.

Anyone on here has any experience or educated views on this? Thanks, Dr S

Get an understated colour instead; my gt3 in slate grey goes unnoticed pretty much everywhere: stealth grey :-)

Have you thought about a Gen II Carrera S with PDK and Power Kit? 408BHP - 0-60 in 4.4 or less IIRC

Engine upgrade to 300 kW (408 bhp). Comprises modified cylinder heads, carbon-fibre air filter casing (upper part), new double resonance intake manifold, sports exhaust system featuring specially designed twin dual-tube tailpipes and modified engine management.
Sounds fun...

You could get it in Macedamia for a more stealth look

I suspect that you will ruin the aerodynamic balance and efficiency of a GT3 is you mess about with the rear spoiler.

Not to mention the effect on residuals!

Most members of the non car loving public can't tell the difference between a basic C2 or GT3, or to put in perspective a viper green C2(if there was such a thing) would grab more attention than silver GT3.

biggrin Well it's more subtle than Guards red !!

In Paul Hogan voice (remember him) ?
That's not a rear wing.

This is a rear wing . . . .

Don't think I'd mess with the rear spoiler on a GT3. Could be a bit like fitting 17" wheels.

Agree the latest spoiler is a bit 'in your face'. I still think the original 997 GT3 is nicer looking.

Yes, you could spec a 997'S' to be more sporting, but it wouldn't be the 'real thing', and a real 997GT3 (mk1 or 2) will definitely retain its value far better.

Thanks for the comments, chaps.

I'm well aware that there is an effect on aerodynamic balance but wonder how big it will actually be on today's speed limit infested roads.

Swapping the 3 wing with a regular S one is easy work for my OPC and I would put on the 3 wing again for resale (or if I went hooning on the German autobahn).

Hardly think you need the rear wing unless you are really high speed driving on the German autobahn or taking a spin on the Ring. Think you should proceed as you suggested. Have fun... smile

One fell off of a cup car during a race and aparently didnt make a difference to the lap time. That probably tells you all you need to know.

Interesting comment there about these spoilers that some of us find horrendous. I also remember an article that Purely Porsche or GTPorsche did? Chris Harris done it i am sure.
Anyway, they had a 997 C2S with Powerkit and a GT3 and the lap times were almost identical.

AS for the OP's question in removing a spoiler from a GT3 - Blasphemous!!!

I must admit, I'm amazed that your clients would be fine with a standard Carrera but the GT3 would be a problem, but you know them far better than I do I suppose.

I'd vote for the subtle colour, and if that isn't enough, employ some bird to do this next to your car...

I believe that a 997.2 GT3 with a SportClassic ducktail would be the ultimate combo, especially given above comments re. wing which fell off a Cup car.
I will be looking to do that on my incoming GT3.
Best,

I've a cup car and mine got snagged in a GT Cup race at Brands GP such that it was hanging off and definitely not doing any downforce stuff. I couldn't tell until I saw it afterwards. Granted I'm not god's gift to racing drivers, but I'm only a bit off the best Cup car pace. So, I think bugger all impact in reality for everyday activity. At 150mph entering a super fast corner and driving on the ragged edge, maybe a difference, but how much of that do you have planned!

I think go for your plan and keep the wing in the garage for resale time. If you would feel less comfortable with the wing on then you'll probably drive it less and what's the point in that!

Frankly I'd go for *anything* that makes the rear end of that GT3 look better. What a dog's dinner. Rip the spoiler off by all means!
