Apologies for asking a question which I am sure has been asked many times before, but can anybody advise on how to identify the various PCM systems?

I am a proud owner of an October 2003 Cayenne S (it was my choice and I love it) but I want to update the maps on the PCM system (CD based not DVD). I have had zero help from my local Porsche garage and they cannot offer me any update on the system but have sourced some other locations which will sell me updated software.

However, I have no wish to purchase new discs only to find they do not work. How can I identify idf it is a PCM version 1 or 2? and also if it needs any additional software to allow me to use updated discs?

I have sourced someone in Bulgaria who is selling 2008 disc sets for $50 - too good to be true?

Hi,

I asked a question yesterday with regard to the Sat Nav in exactly the same car. I have just broken the UK map CD.

It is my understanding that this is PCM 1. The newer PCM 2 being an upgraded system. I do not think the new maps will work. But if they do then please advise me.

Just contacted Porsche. £350 for the full set of discs. Can only get a full set!!

Looked on the internet and found the following contact:

"If anyone else is interested Gil Keane can be contacted on 0121 773 7000 or 07973 216682 or via modern day electronic-mail @
enquiries@bettercarlighting.co.uk"

He is ringing me back tomorrow. They can get a up to date disc at £150 so I have read.

Have a care. PCM 1 and PCM 2 were both CD-based, and 2003 is the change-over year. PCM 2.1 and PCM 3 are DVD-based.

I understand the way of telling which one you have is as follows,

PCM1 has casette
PCM2 has not.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I have ordered the 8 disc package from Eastern Europe and will advise once arrived and if it works.

If you press main and trip at the same time it will tell you what version you have. I had a similar query a few months back and someone posted up that this was how to do it (and it is, which is nice).

If you find out a source for updated discs I'd be interested as I have an 03 Boxster S with a very scratched nav disc that refuses to work 99% of the time.

By pressing the main and trip button that will tell you what version of software you have.

I am sure that PCM 1 has casette and PCM 2 has not.

When I press the buttons together the menu says I have software version 3.0
The unit has a CD in it.
The navigation CD`s say "compatible with software version 3.0 or higher(Push main and trip)."

All I really need is a copy of the CD 4 which covers Great Britain.

You want CD3 of the 8-disk 08.2007 maps, not CD4.

PCM 1 First Generation (8 bit) - 1998 to Dec 2000 996/986 Boxster
PCM 1 Second Generation (16 Bit) - Jan 2001 to Aug 2002 996/986 Boxster
PCM 2.0 - Sept 02 onwards in 996/Boxster
PCM 2.0 - (CD Based) Cayenne introduction until Aug 2004
PCM 2.1 - (DVD Based) Cayenne Sept 2004 on, and all 987/997.

Is it permissable to post links to a source who is selling these for a very cheap price?

Well I got my 8 discs delivered today from Romania.

Hower I am currently in the US and my wife is not very technically minded so I cannot confirm if they work. If they do then it will be well woth the $50 I paid for them.

Just to let you know that the discs are working first class and as are advertised. They actually came from Bulgaria and not Romania as I originally thought.

All 8 discs work fine.
