Hi people, newbie to this site but saw plenty of you at LM last year despite the rain...I am sure that this has been covered at some time on here in the past but does anyone have a definitive reason why Porsche do not cover the corrosion on these red wheels?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Was that a definitive NO from porsche. I did wonder about writing to HO in Germany and raising my concerns over such a fab car that requires wheel refurbishment on a regular basis. Are we just being fobbed of by main agents?

I had an e-mail of support from David Newton -Head of PCGB and an Independent metal specialist which did a report which cost £300 + a Solicitor representing me corresponding to Porsche GB - who then passed it on to Porsche AG
they replied saying it was not their fault ! .
I went along the lines " Fit for Purpose " ( bearing in mind a 996 turbo wheel from 2002-2003 does not show any signs of the " Spidering effect ")

Its all down to the lack of lacquer ,stone chips and the grime on our roads

I cancelled my 997 GT3 RS order over my 996 RS wheels - what use was that ?????

BBS made the 996 GT3 RS wheels and to me was not fit for purpose if Porsche replaces one set then we would all have claims against them and cost millions ( the new wheels on the 997 GT3 RS are a different manufacturer - surely that is admitting that the old 996 RS wheels were not fit for purpose )

I sold my original GT3 RS and now run Carbon Wheels

Sad really when you spend 90K on a car and the wheels shows signs of wear after 18 months

Ive heard rumours that one or two dealerships replaced a set of wheels to their high spending customers

Would Aston Matin/Ferrari/Lambo carry on like this ?

Ive bought 10 Porsches over the last 5 years and many other sales through recommendations to my friends

Im the only Porsche in the Time Attack Series this year and flying the flag - its on Motors TV - and Ive had some TV coverage

Hope they dont Interview me on TV !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it also seems incredibly tortuous getting them refurbed/corrected!

This is pretty poor.

I had a Honda Insight for 4 years, & literally, after every winter the wheels were replaced under warranty due to corrosion.

I might be very wrong here, but aren`t the red or blue GT3 RS wheels just masked, painted and laquered versions of the GT3 wheel? Or are they a totally different wheel on the GT3 RS?

I was looking at getting an RS style version in black done to my silver wheels, but if the paint is just going to look pants after a while I don`t think I`ll bother...

Wheels
One of mine has cracked paint on the spokes and the start of corrosion under the lacquer.

Front Bumper
Had yellowing around the rad vents, resprayed under warranty. (it seems I was a lucky boy here)

Carbon Bonnet
Dimples (dozens of raised spots) on the bonnet, warranty claim refused.

Carbon wing and wing mirror covers
Mine are fine at the moment but I know of others that have cracked.

Porsche just do not care, the 10 yr paint warranty only covers metal/paint and for anything else unless you purchased new from Porsche they just tell you to f@ck off!!!\

Shame the car is just so bloody good or I would just sell it

if you get them powder coated first (whiche the OEM wheels are not) they will last.

The problem is that Porsche decided to anodise the outer rim; which makes it very difficult to match when the corroded wheels are refurbished. You could get the outer rim polished, sprayed silver and clearcoated or even anodised in a slightly different finish, but the kind of chrome anodising they used is quite rare. So if you just have one wheel refurbed, it may look very similar, but it won't be exactly the same. I believe Gareth at Diamond Styling will take a wheel on for about 300 GBP, but best to check. He certainly thought a similar finish was achievable, but was worried about it being exact.

If you wanted to paint a wheel with a normal silver finish, it would be easy to get them refurbed. They aren't cheap wheels to replace either, being in the 800-900 GBP wallet reaming zone per corner (IIRC). So a small problem with corrosion becomes a major expense and headache to fix. Unless you do what Clive did and paint them all in the same Porsche blue for a fraction of the cost and live without the pimp my ride rims. I'm sure they were meant to look like Fuchs or something with their fancy outers but they look a bit prissy to me and will date. It's the only thing I don't like about the black wheels on the new GT2. One colour would look better, surely? What next from Porsche? A factory option of spinnaz on me twenny tooz???!!! biggrin

If they were more refurbable I'm sure they'd have done that. They don't want to pay 4k a set on new ones though frown

It isn't an anodised rim, its something called allachrome (or something like that). Apparently nowhere in the UK can do it. Anodising isn't a million miles away but 250+vat a corner from diamond styling for a rim you use on trackdays is a lot of money.

Love the car, hate the company.

Hi, thanks for all your input. Its a shame that such a great car is let down by this cosmetic blemish. Some of you have quoted great ideas relating to refurbishment and mentioned some differing companies. If you have any contacts that would be great. Thanks again.

Same problem with GT3 MK1 wheels! Apparently known by all owners of this model!

There are a lot of posts about it, very interesting to read!

It seems that Porsche is able to build cars but not wheels! for such a price (the car), I consider that this a major problem for the customers (= us)!

My Mk1 wheels are just polished, but I need to keep them polished everyfortnight, otherwise they look tired, if it rains they get spotted, if it's salty, then you suffer greatly with black spots everywhere, hence they are my summer wheels only.

I tried to get auto factors to lacquer them, but after polishing it wouldn't work, the best suggestions I never took up were aero industry products for chemically anodising the surfcae.

best option for RS wheels is to get them repainted all over. Powder coating is not the best option as the colour match isnt great. Although its a tougher option

gents - i am also having corrosion issues with my GT3RS. lines of bubbles beneath the paintwork on the carbon bonnet and this spidery effect on the inside of the wheels. And as you can guess PCB are showing no interest whatsoever!! i would like to compile a list of owners who are having such problems so we can get together and get a case going. please feel free to contact me.

Hi I never got to the claiming stage, my red wheels look like ste. The paint bubbles and has flaked on all wheels i have spidering on the non painted areas. I did get the front bumper re-painted as it had gone yellow around the vents from heat. If you want pics let me know, but its not what you expect from this calibre of car.

Porsche Reading say they can now do a good quality refurb on these. Approx 500 quid for all 4 I think.
