I'm assuming it's do-able (for a price) as the Turbo usually has it, but how viable is it? On my Saab (the same sort of vintage) it's easy to get the bits second hand on ebay and fit it fairly cheaply as they're less integrated than on modern cars. Same with my MX-5. How about the 944?

I was once told by Zentrum in Notts (Porsche & aircon specialist) that aircon in a 944 is a £1,000 job. It would cost about that to refurb an existing system (swap it from the old sort of gas to the new sort), to fit it to a car without it or to strip out an original one & replace it all.

Obviously the cost is very approximate but it should give you a ball park figure & someone to ask. I know of a couple of 968s that have had it retrofitted, it's completely do-able as you say.

Thanks - when I was looking at Saab 900s I was told the same thing but I got mine changed from R12->R143a pretty cheaply and there are a lot of people buying the systems and fitting them themselves (as they mostly just sit on top of the engine!) for not much.

I guess it's pretty much the same situation...

If you use all new parts then you are looking at circa £2000 for a full install.

Contact Cool-It automotive who did a 968 last year

I know someone stripping AC out of his 968, who I suspect will be happy to sell you the parts if you're interested. I don't know if they're identical or not. PM me if you'd like his contact details.

If it's a must, then buy one with AC already. It will certainly be cheaper and easier than retrofitting it yourself.

Don't some S2s have AC? Or is that purely on the lux...

A few do, but it seems to be pretty rare. Don't want to limit the cars that I look at by specifying a/c as a must!

10 years further down the road, but I have the same question, or more specifically, can anyone point me at a full list of parts I need to put AC in my 1990 944S2, or where I can either get a retrofit kit, or a company that could do it/supply me the parts to do it. The car has had a fortune spent on it (and I mean a fortune), but I really would like AC. Just driven her to the South of France and it would be nice to run the motorway with the windows shut!

Hi, did you get anywhere with this?? It's as if I have written your post because I'm in exactly the same situation.

I assume no one was successful with a retrofit? I’m trying to get hold of Cool-It in Devon (as apparently they did a Porsche, maybe more, a few years ago) but there’s no reply and no response yet from a voicemail. Classic Retrofit acknowledged my email but nothing further. Be good to find someone who could do it - or at least find out the cost!

Just had an informative chat with Alan at Cool-It in Devon. He has retrofitted air con into a Porsche but it is a long and expensive job and some parts are almost impossible to obtain. Labour would be about £2,500 and parts would be about the same - assuming he can get them all. For instance a new double plug for the air con is £700 odd pounds. One can find complete systems that have been removed from cars but there are, apparently, a number of specialised bits such a brackets that are vital and so the parts would need to be checked. Plus, even if you could get all the parts, they would still be 30 plus years old and possibly not, how shall we say, as efficient as they might be. I’m now having a serious think about it - it seems to me, that it probably isn’t worth it…..

I thought it was a tall ask back in 2008. Now 16 years later, even fewer cars on the road and more parts scarcity, I cant see its worth the effort. Even if you had the money..
