Want to test my brakes work well - and practice an emergency stop in my recently purchased Boxster S. Is there any risk of the air bags going off when performing an emergency stop?!

Many thanks!

No, not unless you`ve fitted the super grabber 9000 brake, tyre and remotely deploying anchor package. You need to hit something with a fair old force for the airbags to deploy (to the extent that they will not always deploy in an accident).

Not a chance in hell of them going off, no matter how hard you brake.

On the Porsche driving experience day, we were doing emergency stops from 60-0, 100-0, 150-0 etc

I'm not sure we would have been doing that if there was a risk of the airbag going off !!

Just one question - why do you want to practice emergency stops???!!

not a chance unless the brakes fail and you go careering into a wall.

No risk of the airbag going off - but if you're going to smoke (/destroy) your tyres it's far more fun to practice accelerating absurdly off the lights.

Better safe than sorry wink And I haven't used a car with ABS before - so want to familiarise myself with it + braking effectiveness of the car.

Are you for real? Can't believe people are selling Porsches without explaining these things.

I sincerely hope not but you may also not be aware of the Boxster's handling characteristics. The boxster (and the S in particular) is set up as standard with an inverted negative camber at the back to make it turn in sharply and provide as much feel as you are no doubt experiencing at the moment.

The downside of this is that there are some situations that can catch out the unwary or inexperienced driver, often resulting in a fatal accident. I would hope that whoever sold your Boxster to you explained all this, but i am aware there are some unlicensed Porsche dealers out there who don't furious

So as an aide memoir (and really this should be demonstrated to you rather than told) always keep in mind the following 5 rules to stay safe:

In a third gear right hand bend with the top down, NEVER brake whilst turning.
In a second gear left hand bend with the top up, ALWAYS keep the PSM on.
When accelerating through a series of bends, NEVER touch the throttle.
If you feel the back end start to slide, UNLOCK the aad Airbag Activation Device.
Over 100 MPH with the top down, REGULARLY wear a hair band.

Remember these and you'll be fine. Happy driving smile
