Off to the Nurburgring ring next sat, seems to be a PH trend at the moment...

Looking forward to that, first trip etc, quick question for those who have done it. How long is the drive to Cologne from the ring, and are there any decent motorways nearby that I can get my 911 up to terminal velocity on safely and easily, as I have heard the route to the ring itself from Calais does not have much Autobahn?

Thanks

See you there then

About 1h from Koln

Plenty of autobahn but no de-restricted sections afaik?

Anyway , some REALLY stright roads in blegium on the way too which you could easily see 200

See you there

A61 that runs close to the ring has quite a few derestricted sections but will have loads of Dutch/Danish caravans for hoildays at the moment. It takes about 3.5 hours from Calais to Cologne.

Are you guys there on the 28th? I'm there too. It's my first time this year after 2 aborted attempts, one of which involved smuggling my girlfriend through the eurotunnel border point in the boot.

If you get caught doing 200 in France or Belgium you will probably be arrested and your car impounded.

If you want to do high speeds on the autobahn, best to do it early in the morning, (great in the summer as it is still light) during the day, especially up by the ring, is very tough- as already mentioned the dutch pulling their caravans are very dangerous...

im there with my old man, cant wait beer

Eh, why did you have to smuggle your GF? Did you buy her in eastern europe or something?

She forgot her passport! It seemed a good idea at the time, and it worked. Only problem was the eurotunnel had a fault so we had to go back.

Though it was so easy I might bring a few extra women back next time biggrin

What's the situation with getting insured for the Ring. Most insurers I've spoken to specifically disclude the Ring from cover. Do you just take the risk, or get single trip insurance cover elsewhere?

Many thanks,

give competition car insurance a call - expensive (£750 pd for my gt3rs) but worthwhile.

Check your policy but I would advise against specifically calling and asking your insurer! Unless it states the 'Nurburgring' or 'Nordshleife' as an area you are not insured on, then you should be ok.

Tourist day insurance can be obtained at Competition Car Insurance in Nottingham for £600 for 2 days (£30k-odd of total cover) as I enquired for our group a while back ... no one took it out in the end ... an no one crashed thankfully!

I'm going down for the first time on the 29th September. I have two tickets for the BMW Ring Taxi and only 5 people coming along so far, so there may be a space available for a passenger ride if anyone is interested and can shell out 50 notes.

Specialist insurers are a bit more switched on to the delights of the Nurburgring than they have been in the past. When discussing the trackday element of insurance for the RS, every company has gone through the list of approved companies, then they go on to say the Nurburgring is NOT covered - and that's without prompting or me even mentioning continental circuits or even visiting Germany! I think they've all realised that the Ring is mecca for people like us - and they don't want to take the risk.

The nearest section of derestricted autobahn where you can put your foot down properly is the A1 between Weilerswist and Blankenheim. Not far out of your way.

If you really want to go for it, the best place in Germany is about 90 mins from the 'ring: the A5 south of Frankfurt, just along Frankfurt Airport.
