If as the press sometimes portray, Porsche is so lazy in its design of each 911 generation, why are there such different 911 fan camps btwn eg 993 to 996 to 997?

Surely if they were all the same, we'd all feel the same.

Do Porsche suffer from having got the formula right in the first place 20 yrs ago, and so for each generation to come it's a bit of tinkering here and there?

It's certainly not very inventive. I like the Cayman because it's actually quite a dramatic change for Porsche. They've given it haunches and buttresses.

Press? The only time I've heard (read) this is from Clarkson.

I think the 911 shape needs to be maintained through the years. It's not as if they could make it look like (for example) a Cayman and say "there you go, it's still a 911".

why do progressive versions of the M3 still remain the M3, though? I think it is more than the shape. It's the concept. The 928 was supposed to be the successor to the 911 but it failed because it was more a GT cruiser than an outright sportscar (until the GTS, I understand).
